The collar body includes a ferrule securely disposed in an opening of the collar body, the ferrule including a housing portion to receive a gripping device to grip an optical fiber. A backbone retains the collar body within the housing and includes a fiber jacket clamping portion to clamp a jacket portion of the optical fiber. A boot is attachable to a portion of the backbone, wherein the boot actuates the fiber jacket clamping portion of the backbone upon attachment of the boot to the backbone.

Provided is an alumina-based sulfur recovery catalyst as well as its preparation method, characterized in that the catalyst has a specific surface area of at least about 350 m2/g, a pore volume of at least about 0.40 ml/g, and the pore volume of pores having a pore diameter of at least 75 nm comprises at least about 30% of the pore volume. The alumina-based catalyst according to present invention is made from flashed calcined alumina, pseudoboehmite and optionally, a binder. The present invention further relates to an use of the alumina-based sulfur recovery catalyst and a method for recovering sulfur by using this catalyst.

In one embodiment, an optical switch includes: a first dual-fiber collimator comprising a first pair of optical fibers; a second fiber collimator comprising an output optical fiber; a switching prism movable between a first position and a second position, and a first mirror facing the first collimator. In the first position, the switching prism directs light from an input fiber of the first collimator into the output fiber of the second collimator. In the second position, the switching prism is positioned out of an optical path of light emitted from the input fiber of the first collimator. The first mirror is aligned to reflect light from the input fiber of the first collimator into an output fiber of the first collimator when the switching prism is in the second position. The second collimator may be a dual-fiber collimator, and a second mirror may be placed facing the second collimator.

The present invention relates to a surface interaction type multimode optical fiber coupler. A representative embodiment of the present invention comprises a plurality of optical fibers with at least one having an expanded core section. Sections of the optical fibers including at least a portion of the expanded core sections are fused together forming a fused section. At least one of the optical fibers is suitable for multimode operations. According to an embodiment of the present invention, a method of fabrication an optical fiber coupler comprises: providing a plurality of optical fibers with at least one having an expanded core section; and maintaining sections of the optical fibers including at least a portion of the expanded core sections in contact and simultaneously heating at least a portion of the sections that are in contact to form a fused section until a predetermined end condition is reached.

Apparatus, and an associated method, forms an integrated packet radio communication system. An integrated system is formed of portions of a GPRS system as well as portions of a WLAN system, such as that defined in the IEEE 802.11 standard. A WIP (WLAN Integrated Protocol) layer is defined, functionally positioned between upper-level, GPRS layers and lower-level, WLAN layers. Advantages of a GPRS system as well as advantages of the WLAN system are maintained in the integrated system.
