摘要: A transport for a rectangular tape cartridge enclosing a supply reel having a web of magnetic tape wound thereabout terminating in a free end attached to a leader block. The illustrated embodiment of the transport is designed to fit within the computer industry standard 51/4-inch form factor and utilizes the 1/2-inch tape cartridge defined in Proposed American National Standard X3B5/85-075. An elongate rectangular housing has internal mechanisms for supporting the tape cartridge therein and referencing the cartridge off its side surfaces. The cartridge is manually inserted into the housing through a slot in a face panel extending across a transverse end of the housing. Electro-mechanical assemblies lock the cartridge in place and complete the loading sequence by engaging a drive chuck with the hub of the supply reel, extracting the leader block from the cartridge, and pulling the leader block to the take-up hub to thread the tape along a tape path. A gear driven articulated arm has an outer end which is guided along a hook-shaped track and carries the leader block into engagement with a receptacle in the take-up hub. Precision transverse movement of a magnetic head in the tape path is accomplished by a stepper motor coupled to a band drive through a worm gear reduction.

摘要: A transport for a rectangular tape cartridge enclosing a supply reel having a web of magnetic tape wound thereabout terminating in a free end attached to a leader block. The illustrated embodiment of the transport is designed to fit within the computer industry standard 51/4-inch form factor and utilizes the 1/2-inch tape cartridge defined in Proposed American National Standard X3B5/85-075. An elongate rectangular housing has internal mechanisms for supporting the tape cartridge therein and referencing the cartridge off its side surfaces. The cartridge is manually inserted into the housing through a slot in a face panel extending across a transverse end of the housing. Electro-mechanical assemblies lock the cartridge in place and complete the loading sequence by engaging a drive chuck with the hub of the supply reel, extracting the leader block from the cartridge, and pulling the leader block to the take-up hub to thread the tape along a tape path. A gear driven articulated arm has an outer end which is guided along a hook-shaped track and carries the leader block into engagement with a receptacle in the take-up hub. Precision transverse movement of a magnetic head in the tape path is accomplished by a stepper motor coupled to a band drive through a worm gear reduction.

摘要: The positioner for a magnetic tape cartridge magazine uses a companion cartridge magazine that holds a plurality of preloaded magnetic tape cartridges to individually access any one of the plurality of magnetic tape cartridges held by the cartridge magazine. The positioner of the present invention is able to move the cartridge magazine in a vertical direction, either up or down, such that an associated magnetic tape cartridge loader is able to selectively access any one of the plurality of magnetic tape cartridges loaded in the cartridge magazine. The positioner and loader each contain only one motor: one in the positioner for controlling the vertical motion of the cartridge magazine, one in the loader for loading a magnetic tape cartridge from the cartridge magazine into the associated tape drive. The width of the positioner is equal to or less than the width of the associated tape drive so that two positioner/loader-tape drive units can be mounted side by side.

摘要: A magnetic tape drive in which a tape cartridge is endwise loaded and thereafter minutely moved into a precision alignment position with respect to a read/write head. The drive has a support frame with a front panel and an elongate tray dimensioned to have the cartridge inserted endwise thereon. The tray is supported by the frame for longitudinal sliding movement from a retracted position in which the tray is contained within the frame to an extended position in which a portion of the tray extends through a slot in the front panel. A mechanism is provided for opening the access door of the cartridge while the cartridge is supported on the tray and the tray is being moved from its extended position to it retracted position. Another mechanism is provided for simultaneously moving the head and a capstan drive into engagement with the cartridge once it has been fully inserted and for also moving clamp mechanisms against the bottom plate of the cartridge to minutely move the cartridge against adjustable reference location pins.

摘要: A magnetic head is attached to a hollow carriage which surrounds a hollow cylindrical positioner post rigidly secured at one end to a frame element of a tape drive. Precision ball bearings mounted to the carriage engage the outer surface of the cylindrical positioner post at longitudinally and circumferentially spaced locations. A positioner shaft extends through the positioner post and a tracking nut in one end of the carriage is screwed over a threaded segment of the shaft. A pin extends from the carriage and is longitudinally slidable in a recess in an anti-rotation block mounted on the frame element. A stepper motor can drive the shaft to reciprocate the carriage toward and away from the frame element thereby moving the head traversely with respect to a length of magnetic tape. An adjustable stop on the post limits movement of the carriage toward the frame element.

摘要: A tape guide in a tape cartridge for use with a tape drive includes a fixed shaft and a cylindrical sleeve positioned around the shaft. The sleeve has an inner surface and an outer surface. The inner surface of the sleeve engages the shaft such that there is friction between the sleeve and the shaft. This friction is overcome by friction between tape and the outer surface of the sleeve when the tape engages the outer surface of the sleeve causing the sleeve to rotate around the shaft as the tape moves. The friction between the tape and the outer surface of the shaft decreases below the friction between the sleeve and the shaft once the tape moves at a velocity sufficient to develop an air film between the tape and the outer surface of the sleeve causing the sleeve to cease rotation around the shaft.

摘要: Robot gripper jaw apparatus is disclosed that is suited for grasping a media cartridge in a robot-controlled media library, or for grasping other objects. The gripper jaw apparatus employs a novel circular cam which reduces the amount of torque required to operate the gripper jaws. This allows use of a relatively small servo motor. The use of a circular cam additionally decreases the overall size and complexity of the gripper apparatus as compared to conventional gripper mechanisms. The gripper apparatus provides for an easily controllable robot gripper jaw mechanism for grasping a media cartridge wherein the force applied by the gripper jaw mechanism does not damage the media cartridge being grasped, due to the use of a flat spring which limits the force applied to the media cartridge. In addition, the gripper apparatus does not require that the gripper drive servo motor be reversed in order to release the media cartridge. Therefore, the gripper jaw servo motor need only rotate in one direction. This uni-directional servo motor motion reduces the complexity of the gripper controlling electronics and also reduces servo motor brush wear.

摘要: The loader for magnetic tape cartridges uses a receiver that holds a single magnetic tape cartridge or a companion cartridge magazine that holds a plurality of preloaded magnetic tape cartridges to individually access any one of the plurality of magnetic tape cartridges held by the magazine. The loader of the present invention is able to move a magnetic tape cartridge from the receiver or a magazine into the associate tape drive without the use of a friction feed drive. The loader contains only one motor for loading a magnetic tape cartridge from the magazine into the associated tape drive. The width of the loader is equal to or less than the width of the associated tape drive so that two loader-tape drive units can be mounted side by side.

摘要: A cassette for a high performance tape drive is disclosed. A cassette shell having the same general external dimensions as an industry standard leader block tape cartridge (3480/3490) includes both a tape supply spool and a take-up spool. Two tape guides present a segment of tape to a cassette access port which can be closed by a sliding door to prevent contamination when the tape is not in use. A tape cleaning device and a spool locking device are incorporated into the cassette mechanism.

摘要: A pneumatic compliant tape guidance device for pneumatically applying a biasing load to a passing tape media. The tape guidance device includes at least one guide button and associated cylinder in which the guide button travels. It also includes a supply port which provides the input for a pressure and/or a vacuum to a pressurized chamber which couples the supply port with the cylinder. The guide button position and its applied pressure are controlled by a compressor which controls the amount of air pressure applied to the guide button through the supply port. The pneumatic compliant tape guidance applies pressure to the top edge or bottom edge of the tape media. The guide button may be configured to travel over a support tube which transfers the pressure/vacuum applied at the supply port to the guide button. The amount of pressure the guide button applies to the passing tape media is determined by the pressure/vacuum which is applied by a pneumatic source to the supply port. The pneumatic compliant tape guidance device enables the present invention to apply a predetermined pressure to the tape media, to change the amount of pressure quickly and easily, and can be used in multiple configurations to apply a specific customized pressure profile to a traveling tape.
