A film cassette is disclosed wherein a film spool having a film roll coiled about it is rotated in an unwinding direction to advance a leading section of the film roll into and through a film passage slit to the outside of the cassette shell. The film spool includes a pair of annular constraining lips coaxially disposed on the spool core to space the outermost convolution of the film roll from an interior curved wall of the cassette shell. The leading section of the film roll is tapered asymetrically and is relatively short to allow it to protrude from between the constraining lips and into slight contact with the shell wall.When the film spool is initially rotated in the unwinding direction, the spool core is rotated relative to the constraining lips until there results a firm non-slipping relation between the outermost convolution and the lips, to thus cause the lips to be rotated thereafter with the spool core. The non-slipping relation imparts a beam strength to the leading section of the film roll which, when the film spool is rotated in the unwinding direction, combines with the asymetric design of the leading section to increase the likelihood that the leading section will feed into the film passage slit.

A rotatable drum receives the core, and includes a recessed slot and a projection which engages a perforation of the film for permitting motion of the film as the drum is rotated. In a film cassette, a film spool is rotatable independently of a pair of coaxially spaced rotatable disks. The two disks have respective circumferential lips which prevent the outermost leader convolution of a film roll wound on the spool from clock-springing into contact with the cassette shell. When the spool is initially rotated, the disks may remain substantially stationary and the film roll, since its inner end is secured to the spool, tends to expand radially to ensure a non-slipping relation between the outermost leader convolution and the lips. Then, rotation of the spool must rotate the disks and stationary internal spreaders will deflect successive sections of the disks to an axial dimension exceeding the film width, thereby allowing corresponding sections of the outermost leader convolution to exit from the radial confinement of the lips. Stationary internal guides direct the freed end of the outermost leader convolution to the cassette opening. Sufficient film thrust is provided by the spool as it is rotated, to thread the film leader along a predetermined path from the cassette opening, particularly because the outermost leader convolution is kept out of contact with the cassette shell.

The flanges radially confine the outermost convolution of a film roll wound on the spool to prevent the film roll from clock-springing against the cassette shell and thereby hindering film movement. A pair of internal cam members are rotatable from outside of the cassette shell to open a light lock by slightly separating opposite throat portions of the shell. Another pair of internal cam members are rotated with the first pair to flex a limited section of the flanges apart an axial distance sufficient to radially free a corresponding section of the outermost convolution. Then, rotation of the film spool will cause successive sections of the flanges to be momentarily flexed apart, and each freed section of the outermost convolution will be advanced automatically to the outside of the cassette shell.

An x-ray film cassette having a base and a cover adapted to close upon the base. The cover is provided with an identification window. A pressure plate is secured within the cassette. The cover, pressure plate and base form a light-tight space for receiving a sheet of x-ray film. The pressure plate is also provided with an identification window which is in substantial alignment with the identification window of the cover. A light-tight slideable window shutter is provided for covering of the identification window of the cover and/or the pressure plate. The slideable window shutter, when in a first position, provides a light-tight seal against the windows and when in a second position allows information to be provided to an x-ray film contained within the cassette. An indicator assembly is secured to the pressure plate and is at least partially visible through the cover for indicating when film is present within the cassette and for indicating when the window shutter has been opened.

A cassette for a photographic element of the kind used in computed radiography comprises a first cassette portion and a second cassette portion that are telescoped together during assembly to form the cassette. The first portion has a rectangular panel and edge walls extending around three side edges of the panel. The second cassette portion comprises a rectangular panel on which the photographic element is permanently secured. An edge wall is attached to one side edge only of the rectangular panel of the second cassette portion and it extends between the edge walls of the first cassette portion when the two portions are assembled together. A locking mechanism carried by the cassette portions holds them together in assembled relation but is easily released by an actuator for removing the second cassette portion and the photographic element so they can be delivered together to a computed radiography reader.

Apparatus for storing and dispensing pigmented marking particles into the development mechanism of a reproduction apparatus. The storing and dispensing apparatus comprises a cartridge including a housing for storing pigmented marking particles, and an elongated opening in the housing through which such marking particles may be dispensed. A cover is removably secured to the cartridge housing to seal the housing opening to prevent contamination of the environment by escape of such marking particles through the opening. The cover, in the preferred embodiment being a flexible sheet member, is selectively removed from sealing relation with the cartridge housing opening and held adjacent to the cartridge away from exposure to the environment when the cartridge is located relative to the development mechanism, whereby marking particles may readily be dispensed into the development mechanism through the housing opening and contamination of the environment is substantially prevented.

An anti-clockspringing mechanism for a web-roll comprises a unitary lock member having a cylindrical body rotatably mounted in a sidewall of the cartridge. A flange on a web-spool on which the web-roll is wound is provided with an annular lip having alternately spaced lugs and notches. The body has a handle on one side thereof extending toward the exterior of the cartridge, and a lock member on the opposite side of the body extending into the interior cavity of the cartridge. The lock member is in alignment with a sector of the annular lip and lies in the plane of the annular lip. The lock member further comprises at least one shoulder projecting from the opposite side of the body. The lock member is moveable between an unlocked position, in which the shoulder is withdrawn from a lip notch and is out of alignment with the lip lugs for allowing the web-spool to freely rotate, and a locked position in which the shoulder is in alignment with the lip and nests within a lip notch in a position transverse to the lip lugs for preventing or blocking the web-spool from rotating.
