Method and improvements for joining wireless mesh networks are provided. In one embodiment, a controller in each network receives a message from a node in its respective network, the message indicating that the respective nodes each received a signal from a node in the other network. Each controller, in response to receiving the respective messages, validates the other network, and responsively (a) directs its respective node to enter a bridging mode and (b) provides its respective node with bridging data that includes a security key for communications between the two nodes. The two nodes then associate with each other using the security key, allowing communications to pass between the two wireless mesh networks.

A method and system for allocating bandwidth in a wireless communication system arranged as a tree structure having a plurality of nodes that are each either a subscriber node or a base station node. A given one of the base station nodes within the tree structure directly serves a plurality of child nodes including at least one child base station node that itself directly serves at least one child subscriber node. The method of bandwidth allocation includes (i) determining a total number of descendant subscriber nodes of the given base station node and (ii) using the total number descendant subscriber nodes of the given base station node as a basis to proportionally allocate a quantity of data bandwidth at the given base station node among the total number of descendant subscriber nodes of the given base station node.

Methods and systems for a mesh-network takeover are provided. In one embodiment, a first controller having a first attribute and a first group of nodes in its network receives a message from a node in the first group. The message indicates that the node in the first group received a signal from a node that is in a second group and associated with a second controller having a second attribute. Further, the message includes the second attribute. Responsive to receiving the message, the first controller compares the first attribute with the second attribute. As a result of comparing the first attribute with the second attribute, the first controller makes a determination that it has a lower priority than the second controller. Responsive to making the determination, the first controller no longer communicates with the first group, resulting in at least one node in the first group joining the second network.

The WLAN includes a “virtual” visitor location register (VVLR) for storing information about multi-mode mobile stations being served by the WLAN. Each wireless access point in a wireless local area network (WLAN) is allocated a set of one or more identifiers. A correlation database stores information that relates the geographic location of each wireless access point and the identifiers allocated to it. When a mobile node associated with a wireless access point in the WLAN originates a 9-1-1 or other emergency call, one of the wireless access point's identifiers is included in the call origination request. By querying the correlation database, the wireless access point's geographic location may be determined from the identifier. When a public safety answering point (PSAP) answers the mobile node's call, the PSAP may obtain the geographic location of the wireless access point with which the mobile node is associated. This location information could be pushed to the PSAP, or the PSAP could obtain the location information by querying the correlation database.
