摘要: A transducer for non-invasive transcutaneous transmission of pulsed ultrahigh-frequency acoustic radiation, in body tissue and/or fluids adjacent a bone fracture is "on target" when a fraction of the propagated energy within the longitudinal-response lobe of the transducer encounters a crack or other open feature of the fracture, where a gap or space exists between closely spaced fracture walls. The ultrahigh-frequency acoustic radiation sees this "on target" feature as the entrance to a waveguide, whereby pulsed ultrahigh-frequency acoustic radiation is guided within the crack. When this acoustic radiation encounters a gap of at least a quarter wavelength (at the ultrahigh frequency), a standing wave condition establishes itself, with dissipation of the ultrahigh frequency and with demodulation to establish a therapeutically beneficial low-frequency acoustic condition, within the fracture, and acting where most needed, namely, on and between wall regions of adjacent fragments of the broken bone. Collagen, callus and cartilage development is accelerated, closing the gap in a matter of days, so that thereafter zone-flooding of shear waves from transducer radiation can be osteogenically operative upon both bone fragments of the fracture and on the collagen through which they are united at first tentatively and then increasingly more securely as treatment continues, from day to day, as with one or more single treatments of 20 minutes per day.

摘要: A modal converter having at least one ultrasonic transducer or at least one array of such transducers positioned on the modal converter at various angles relative to a tissue surface and bone tissue surface, such that some combination of one or more of the following occur: longitudinal waves are produced perpendicular to the bone surface, longitudinal waves propagate along the surface of the skin after incidence at the skin tissue surface, and both longitudinal and shear waves propagate along the surface of the bone after incidence at the bone tissue surface. Illuminating an open tissue wound and bone fracture site with these acoustic modes enhances and promotes angiogenesis and the biological endostial or periostial healing phases, or both, of the bone fracture healing process. The spatial and temporal distribution of acoustic waves directed to the treatment area via the ultrasonic transducers and the modal converter may be controlled.

摘要: A method and kit for therapeutically treating bone and tissue injuries using ultrasound. The method includes the steps of introducing an ultrasound contrast agent into the patient, preferably, the patient's blood stream, and impinging ultrasonic waves in proximity to an injury. The ultrasound contrast agent facilitate in lowering the cavitation threshold, i.e., the energy required for the cavitation, to a level attainable by the ultrasonic waves to induce acoustic intracellular microstreaming to accelerate the healing process. The method further includes the steps of maintaining the resonance bubble frequency of the microbubbles of the ultrasound contrast agent from 0.5 MHz to 10 MHz; maintaining the acoustic transmit frequency of the ultrasound waves from 10 kHz to 10 MHz; and maintaining the acoustic spatial average-temporal average (SATA) intensity of the ultrasonic waves from 5 to 500 mW/cm2. The kit of the invention includes at least one ergonomically constructed ultrasonic transducer (16) configured to cooperate with a placement module (14) for placement in proximity to an injury and a portable, ergonomically constructed main operating unit (12) constructed to fit within a pouch (18) worn by the patient.

摘要: The invention relates to apparatus and method for ultrasonically and electromagnetically treating tissue to treat, for example, traumatized tissue or a bone injury. The apparatus includes at least one ultrasonic transducer assembly and at least one electromagnetic coil-assembly configured to cooperate with a placement module for placement in proximity to the treatment area. The apparatus also utilizes a portable main operating unit constructed to fit within a pouch or carrying case worn by the patient. In operation, at least one ultrasonic transducer and at least one electromagnetic coil are activated by transmitting control signals to the placement module from the main operating unit. The activation of the at least one ultrasonic transducer causes ultrasonic waves to be propagated toward the treatment area which are modulated by electrostatic and magnetic forces generated by the at least one electromagnetic coil. The activation of the at least one ultrasonic transducer and the at least one electromagnetic coil may be performed at the same time or at different times for varying periods.

摘要: The invention relates to apparatus and method for therapeutically treating reflex sympathetic dystrophy using ultra sound. The apparatus includes at least one ergonomically constructed ultrasonic transducer configured to cooperate with a placement module or strip for placement in proximity to pain receptors of the sympathetic nervous system. The apparatus also utilizes a portable, ergonomically constructed main operating unit constructed to fit within a pouch worn by the patient. In operation, at least one ultrasonic transducer positioned in proximity to the pain receptors of the sympathetic nervous system is excited for a predetermined period of time. To ensure that at least one ultrasonic transducer is properly positioned, and to insure compliance with a treatment protocol, a safety interlock is provided to prevent inadvertent excitation of the at least one ultrasonic transducer. In an alternate embodiment, the apparatus includes a treatment basin having a plurality of ultrasonic transducer assemblies placed on the perimeter thereof. The patient places an injured part of the body therein and the transducer assemblies are excited to impinge ultrasonic waves to the injured part of the body.

摘要: A non-invasive bone condition data acquisition system performs sensitive and reliable clinical data acquisition, localization and classification of bone disease, particularly osteoporosis. The bone condition data acquisition system measures a correlation between a wideband AE signature and a spatially localized bone microarchitecture, which is used to determine fracture risk. The bone condition data acquisition system includes processors and memory for analyzing AE signals from bone tissue to generate information-bearing attributes, for extracting a set of times-of-arrival and a feature vector from the attributes, for utilizing the set of times-of-arrival to derive the locations of the AE events, and for responding to the feature vector to classify the bone using a neural network and a nearest neighbor rule processor.
