摘要: An ignition analyzer apparatus tests the condition of the ignition coil of an internal combustion engine. A gating pulse is supplied to a test circuit immediately before the points are to open for a selected cylinder which causes the test circuit to provide a low resistance in parallel with the points when the points open. This allows a reduced primary current to flow through the ignition coil and prevents the production of a voltage pulse large enough to fire the spark plug for the selected cylinder. While the points are open and the test circuit is providing a low resistance path, the primary current flowing through the coil is measured. The gating pulse ends approximately half-way between the "points open" time of the selected cylinder and the "points open" time of the next cylinder so that the rotor of the distributor is between distributor terminals. When the gating pulse ends, the test circuit changes to a nonconductive state, and since the points have not yet closed, the primary current is interrupted and a high voltage secondary test signal is induced in the secondary of the ignition coil. This test signal cannot, however, fire a spark plug since the rotor is in between distributor terminals, and since the reduced amplitude of the primary current prevents arc-over from the rotor to the distributor terminals. The measured primary current and the measured high voltage secondary test signal are used to provide an indication of ignition coil condition.

摘要: A signal representing the RPM of an internal combustion engine is produced by a signal processor connected to the battery of the vehicle. The signal processor derives an electrical signal from the battery which contains signal components produced by operation of the vehicle ignition system, as well as components from a multitude of other sources such as the voltage regulator, fans, air conditioning and other electrical systems of the vehicle. The signal processor filters and signal processes the signal derived from the vehicle battery to produce a signal having a frequency which is related to the RPM of the engine.

摘要: A hand-held ignition voltage tester for detecting voltage on a spark plug wire in an ignition system, such as a distributorless ignition system. The tester includes a housing, positive and negative power cables and a capacitive probe for capacitively coupling to the spark plug wire. The capacitive probe generates a voltage signal which is representative of the voltage on the spark plug wire. A plurality of voltage level indicators are mounted to the housing to form a bar graph, with each indicator corresponding to a selected voltage level. A measurement circuit is coupled to the power cables and the capacitive probe for activating the voltage level indicators in response to the voltage signal.

摘要: A vehicle current drain tester tests nominal current drain through a vehicle electrical system while preserving on-board vehicle memory. The tester includes a measurement current loop, an offset circuit and a fail indicator. The current loop includes first and second tester terminals for connection to the electrical circuit, first and second voltage source terminals for connection to a voltage source and a current sensor. The current sensor generates a measurement signal in response to current flowing in the current loop. The offset circuit is coupled to the current sensor and applies an offset to the measurement signal which represents a selected drain current level in the vehicle. The offset circuit generates a fail output signal as a function of whether the measurement signal exceeds the offset. The fail indicator is coupled to the offset circuit and is responsive to the fail output signal.

摘要: An engine analyzer for an internal combustion engine includes an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter which digitizes an analog input waveform representing, for example, a secondary or primary voltage waveform of the ignition coil of the internal combustion engine. The sampling rate of the analog digital converter is determined by dividing the waveform time period by the desired number of samples. An adjustment factor C is used to provide a buffer period during the sampling period of the waveform. A display for displaying the waveform has a buffer region which corresponds to the buffer period. Thus, a variation in the speed of the engine which causes the engine to slow down and extends the period of the engine waveform does not cause a loss of data collected from the waveform because the buffer period provides a margin of error.
