A misfire detecting apparatus for an internal combustion engine has a start determinator, a rotation counter, a misfire detector, a misfire calculator, a setting means, an abnormality determinator, and a warning means. The start determinator determines a starting condition of the internal combustion engine. The rotation counter counts a total number of rotations of the internal combustion engine. The misfire detector detects a misfire of the internal combustion engine. The misfire calculator calculates a rate of misfire using data from the misfire detector, and the rate of misfire is the number of misfires per a predetermined total number of rotations. The setting means sets a basic rate of misfire in response to the start condition of the internal combustion engine. The abnormality determinator determines an abnormal condition of the internal combustion engine when the rate of misfire calculated by the misfire calculator is greater than the basic rate of misfire set by the setting means. The warning means warns of an abnormality of the internal combustion engine when the abnormality determinator determines an abnormal condition of the internal combustion engine. The detection whether the internal combustion engine is abnormal or not can be accurate by this misfire detecting apparatus.

A failure determination system and method for an internal combustion engine and an engine control unit are provided which are capable of properly determining a failure of a variable valve mechanism for inactivating a valve system associated with at least one of cylinders during a predetermined operation of the engine, by discriminating a misfire caused by the failure of the mechanism from a normal misfire. Fuel injection valves inject fuel for each cylinder and oxygen concentration of exhaust gases is detected. A misfire condition is detected on a cylinder-by-cylinder basis. Fuel injection to a misfiring cylinder is stopped. A failure of the mechanism is determined, when a parameter based on the oxygen concentration detection indicates a richer value of an actual air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gases than a predetermined reference value does, under a condition of the fuel injection being stopped.

An operating range of the second failure diagnostic device is set to substantially include an operating range of the first failure diagnostic device and to be extended from the operating range of the first failure diagnostic device to include a lower intake negative pressure range.

A system for monitoring fuel consumption and optimizing refueling of a vehicle. The system includes a fuel level sensor designed to be mounted on a fuel tank. The fuel sensor has a transducer, such as an ultrasonic transducer, for generating a distance signal that represents the distance between the sensor and the surface of the fuel in the fuel tank. A processor coupled to the transducer is programmed to convert the distance signal to a percentage of capacity signal, calculate the volume of fuel within the fuel tank, and create a message that includes information regarding the volume of fuel in the fuel tank. The processor of the fuel level sensor is coupled to a network that may include a dispatch terminal, a fuel optimization server, and a fuel-price-by-location service. The network calculates an optimal location for refilling the fuel tank and a route to travel to the location. It broadcasts a message containing the refueling and route information to the vehicle information system, and devices coupled to the vehicle information system then display the message to inform the driver of the vehicle when and where to refuel.
