    摘要: An engine analyzer has an oscilloscope screen display operable with a fixed-time sweep. The analyzer includes a data acquisition system for digitizing analog input waveforms and a memory for storing the digitized waveform data, the analyzer including sensors for detecting each cylinder firing and the firing of the no. 1 cylinder for identification of the cylinders. A processor includes trigger means for controlling the triggering of the oscilloscope display at a trigger point which corresponds to the firing of a trigger cylinder which is selectable by the user, so that the displayed waveform data begins with the stored data for the selected trigger cylinder. The user can also selectively vary the location of the trigger point on the screen display.

    摘要: An engine analyzer for plotting engine cylinder firing or spark voltage information, corresponding to distinct points of a cylinder firing waveform, in histograph form to assist in identifying a cylinder-misfire condition. In an illustrative embodiment, two traces are provided. The lower trace depicts a histograph, representative of the firing or spark voltage and engine speed of each cylinder over successive engine cycles. The histograph consists of successive pairs of adjacent, vertical histo-bars, each pair representing voltage and engine speed for a single cylinder. The first histo-bar in each pair represents the spark or firing voltage for a given cylinder and the second histo-bar represents the instantaneous engine speed measured over the duration of the given cylinder. The vertical histo-bar pairs are plotted sequentially from left to right, representing successive cylinder firings. The vertical histo-bars may be of one or more colors so that the associated plot for a given cylinder of interest is easily identified. The histographs are available in both live and freeze mode. An upper trace displays primary or secondary waveforms for one or more selected cylinders.

    摘要: An adapter that enables the testing of secondary ignition signals of vehicle engines equipped with wireless secondary ignition systems is disclosed. The adapter detects secondary ignition voltage pulses generated by such an ignition system. It includes an input port coupled to an engine ground for receiving an electrical signal comprising a secondary ignition signal; an output port; and a filter coupled between said input port and said output port, said filter passing an electrical representation of said secondary ignition signal to said output port. In a preferred embodiment, the adapter includes a preamplifier coupled between the input port and the filter to amplify the electrical signal and an amplifier coupled between the filter and the output port to amplify the secondary ignition signal. The output port preferably is coupled to an oscilloscope allowing a technician to visually inspect the secondary ignition system waveform.

    摘要: An interface for coupling an engine analyzer to an engine having a distributorless ignition system includes a pair of pickup clamps for coupling signals from respective groups of spark plug wires. A logic cell array is supplied with spark plug secondary voltage polarity and pattern information, corresponding to an engine under test from a ROM. The technician is instructed as to which wires to place in each clamp. A semiconductor input switch is controlled by the logic cell array to sort the secondary voltages from the pickup clamps according to polarity. The real and the wasted sparks are then determined based upon the magnitude of the signals from the input switch. The apparatus permits a "rapid test" (of secondary voltages only) by developing a pseudo #1 primary clock from the pickup clamp signals. A CPU in the interface is controllable by an external computer or by an operator keypad. A vehicle "personality" module interfaces the logic cell array with the voltage levels on a connector of a corresponding vehicle.

    摘要: An internal combustion engine analyzer provides both data acquisition and data processing and includes an analog waveform analysis subsystem together with a general purpose background system wherein appropriate power distribution is provided for the system as a whole and peripheral equipment such as a printer, keyboard and an analog/digital CRT is also provided. The input signals to be analyzed are waveforms generally associated with internal combustion engines and peripheral equipment. Exemplary waveforms are the primary and secondary ignition waveforms. The waveforms are attenuated to reasonable levels and multiplexed to analog circuitry which serves to measure waveform magnitude at one or more sampling points along the length of the wave and to also measure the manner in which the characteristics of the waveform change. The analog measurements are digitized and coupled to a processor which in turn controls the operation of the analog circuitry. The digitized measurements together with previously entered engine identification data are analyzed by the processor to thereby control subsequent data taking and to generate appropriate maintenance and repair instructions which are communicated visually to an operator in the disclosed embodiment.

Simple connections to the engine provide the necessary signals to the solid-state electronic analyzer. Various pattern display modes may be selected. An anticipatory cylinder fire signal, which is related to crankshaft rotational degrees, permits a given cylinder to be shorted for the desired interval, regardless of the engine speed. This anticipatory cylinder fire signal is obtained from a servoed ramp waveform generator. Individual cylinder waveform patterns are synchronously and simultaneously displayed on an oscilloscope.

The system develops a first current pulse when the voltage across the distributor gap for each cylinder in the engine breaks down. The system develops a second current pulse when the gap in the spark plug for each cylinder in the engine breaks down. Means are provided for determining whether each individual spark plug is operating properly. Means are also provided for determining the characteristics of the spark plug signal.
