    摘要: A thermoelectric material having enhanced Seebeck coefficient is characterized by a microstructure comprising nanoscale Pb inclusions dispersed in matrix substantially composed of PbTe. The excess Pb is obtained either by adding Pb in an amount greater than the stoichiometric amount needed to form PbTe, or by adding an additive effective to getter Te so as to produce the desired excess. The method is generally applicable to enhance thermoelectric properties of compounds of Pb, Sn or Ge, and Te, Se, or S.

    摘要: A thermoelectric material that exhibits enhanced thermoelectric power, and thus an improvement in the thermoelectric figure of merit. Bismuth, as elemental bismuth, a bismuth alloy, a bismuth intermetallic compound, a mixture of these, or any of these including a dopant, is embedded in the pores of a host material having an average pore size in the range of about 5-15 nm. A method of making a composite thermoelectric material is also provided in which a porous host material is provided having an average pore size of about 5-15 nm, and a vapor of a bismuth-based material is caused to flow into the pores from a vapor inlet side of the host material to a vapor outlet side. The host material is then cooled from the vapor outlet side to progressively condense the vapor in the holes in the direction from the outlet side to the inlet side to progressively form nanowires of the bismuth-based material in the pores.

    摘要: Exemplary embodiments include systems, methods, and compositions for the intra-operative detection of target tissue. At least one embodiment includes a fluorescence detection instrument that may be used for intra-operative detection of a fluorescent targeting agent, its binding site, and its interaction within cancer tissues. An exemplary embodiment is highly sensitive to the local deposition of fluorescence agents even at a low concentration. In at least one embodiment, the system includes a handheld navigation instrument that is usable to excite, detect, and report the fluorescent deposition of the targeting agent in real-time. In alternative embodiments, the system includes a wearable unit to excite, detect, and visually report the fluorescent deposition of the targeting agent to the user. The wearable unit includes eyewear that allow the user to perform image-guided surgery based on the near real-time fluorescence detection of the fluorescent targeting agent.

    摘要: Soot content in Diesel engine lubrication oil is determined using electrical resistance measurements of the oil at high frequency. A sensor in the form of a capacitor is immersed in the oil, wherein the oil serves as a dielectric between the plates. The capacitance and resistance between the plates change as a function of engine oil condition. An inductor is placed in series with the sensor, and high frequencies are sweeped over a range to find resonance where the capacitive and inductive reactances cancel. At this frequency, the resistance of the oil is measured and the condition of the oil thereby determined.

    摘要: A magnetoresistor voltage divider includes a bottom layer disposed on a substrate. A middle layer is disposed on the bottom layer. A top layer is disposed on the middle layer. The bottom and top layer are resistive layers and the middle layer is an insulating layer. A common terminal is connected to the bottom layer and the top layer. A reference resistor terminal is connected to the bottom layer only. Moreover, a sensing MR terminal is connected to the top layer only. Accordingly, a sensing MR is established between the common terminal and the sensing MR terminal and a reference resistor is established between the common terminal and the reference resistor terminal. Thus, the sensing MR is stacked on top of the reference resistor.
