The invention concerns a blade coater and a method for coating a web backed by a rotatable backing roll. The blade coater unit includes a support structure, a feeder mounted to the support structure and capable of feeding the coating mix onto the web when brought close to the web in running conditions, and a smoothing device arranged to the immediate vicinity of the web for the application of the fed coating mix. The blade coater unit is essentially placed below the backing roll, the smoothing device is a flexible blade having a tip inclination angle .alpha. less than 20.degree., and the feeder has a narrow exit opening arranged to the stem of the flexible blade without any essential steps in order to facilitate a fast, laminar flow of the coating mix. The approach in accordance with the invention achieves a coat of high quality.

The surface of a web is monitored by a fault detection system (20), a machine condition monitoring system, a quality measurement system, a web moisture measurement and/or a web temperature measurement and the soiled part of the surface of the roll is detected and localized by means of a soiling monitoring apparatus (31, 35; 60). A method for quick-opening a set of rolls in a calender, in particular a supercalender, in which a paper or board web to be calendered is passed through calendering nips formed by a variable-crown top roll, a variable-crown bottom roll and by two or more intermediate rolls arranged between the top and bottom rolls. The rolls are arranged to form a substantially vertical stack of rolls, and the intermediate rolls are supported by the use of hydraulic relief cylinders so as to relieve the nip load produced by the mass of the bearing housings of the intermediate rolls and auxiliary devices associated therewith. During the quick-opening of the set of rolls, the bottom roll of the set of rolls is lowered and the relief pressures in the hydraulic relief cylinders are discharged so as to open the calendering nips. The hydraulic oil flowing out from the relief cylinders is controlled by valves connected to the relief cylinders of each intermediate roll so that, during quick-opening of the set of rolls, the roll nips may be opened in a controlled manner in a desired order. A hydraulic system for the set of rolls is also disclosed.

In the method, a base web is formed from a mixture of water and pulp supplied from the headbox and the web is dried by removing water over the press section and over the dryer section by heating. The formed web is calendered at least once to modify the surface on at least one of its sides. Before calendering the cross-direction thickness profile of the web is standardized and calendering is carried out by means of a long-nip calender, whereby good surface quality is obtained without losing the bulk or stiffness of the web.

The invention also concerns a device for conditioning of a roll, in particular of a roll in a paper machine and/or in a paper finishing device, which device (20) comprises means for cleaning and/or grinding the roll. The device (20) consist of an assembly (20) of devices which comprises a cleaning/conditioning unit (24, 23, 29), a control unit (33), and measurement units (30, 31, 32), and the device operates continuously and can be operated during running.

The heatable roll is heated so as to plasticize the surface layer of the paper web that is placed at the side of the heatable roll, preferably so that the temperature of the surface layer in the calendering nip exceeds the glass-transition temperatures of the polymers contained in the paper. Before entering into the calendering nip, the paper web is moistened, so as to lower the glass-transition temperatures of the polymers contained in the paper, and pre-heated.
