摘要： An optical polarizer is described in which a propagation layer, i.e., a titanium diffused light guiding region in a lithium niobate Z-cut crystal, is covered with a dielectric buffer layer of ZnO. The dielectric buffer layer is covered by a meal layer, typically aluminum, although gold or silver can be used. The thickness of the buffer is chosen so as to increase the attenuation of TM modes of radiation in the waveguide relative to TE modes. The buffer layer thickness can fall within a broad range and is not required to fall within a very precise range to achieve a peak level of attenuation.

摘要： A self-aligned optical coupler, and method of manufacturing thereof, for conducting light from and to vertical and/or horizontal ports on optical devices or optoelectric integrated circuits. The device or circuit having the respective port has keys and/or slots on the device or circuit for self-aligning an end of the optical coupler to the port. The end has corresponding slots and/or keys. Visual alignment marks may be used instead so as to permit automatic alignment with machine vision devices. The coupler may have one or a plurality of waveguides. One of the ends of the coupler may have a connector for a self-aligning optical connection to a connector receptacle of a module or a backplane.

摘要： An optical switch with a waveguide used as a detector is disclosed. The switch can be used for circuit or packet switching. The waveguide is used to tap off a fraction of the input signal going into the switch. The waveguide then sends the tapped off signal to a local electronic control to decide if switching is necessary or not. This is determined by within the local electronic control associated with the switch. The switch is set or reset based on information in the electrical representation of the signal which reaches the local electronic control. The switch can be used with continuous input signals as well as data packet input signals. By spacing the timing of data in the header differently than in the data in the "data" portion of a signal, extremely high bandwidth available in pure optical communications can be maintained.
