摘要:
An optical polarizer is described in which a propagation layer, i.e., a titanium diffused light guiding region in a lithium niobate Z-cut crystal, is covered with a dielectric buffer layer of ZnO. The dielectric buffer layer is covered by a meal layer, typically aluminum, although gold or silver can be used. The thickness of the buffer is chosen so as to increase the attenuation of TM modes of radiation in the waveguide relative to TE modes. The buffer layer thickness can fall within a broad range and is not required to fall within a very precise range to achieve a peak level of attenuation.

A laser is disclosed comprising: a source of optical pumping radiation; a lasant rod; an input mirror; two quarter-wave plates; polarizing means, adjacent to a quarter-wave plate, for polarizing said lasant light radiated from said rod; second harmonic generating means for producing an output at twice the frequency at which said rod lases; and an output coupler.

A method is provided for controlling the output frequency of a laser having a lasant gain medium which is characterized by at least two gain curve distributions over a range of lasant frequencies and having a laser cavity which is characterized by at least one resonant frequency within one gain curve distribution. The method comprises the steps of: locating in the laser cavity a first Lyot filter which has a transmission band which favors the frequency range of one gain curve distribution in preference to the frequency range of the other gain curves; and locating in the cavity a second Lyot filter which has a transmission band which favors said one resonant frequency within the frequency range of the one gain curve, whereby an essentially single frequency output is obtained.

A method of aligning and attaching optical fibers to substrate optical waveguides is disclosed. In accordance with the method, one or more slabs of preferentially etchable material and a waveguide substrate are placed adjacent each other face down on a flat surface for aligning the tops of the slabs with the top of the waveguide. A backing plate is secured to the back surface to hold the entire assembly together. The preferentially etchable material is thereafter etched to form v-grooves in alignment with the light guiding region of the waveguide substrate. Thereafter, optical fibers are secured thereto in an optically aligned manner with the light guiding region. In another aspect, the invention is directed to a fiber pigtailed waveguide substrate manufactured in accordance with the method.
