A tool for positioning a lower guide tube of a reactor for replacement of old split-pin assemblies by new split-pin assemblies. The lower guide tube has an upper and a lower flange and has a length typically between 124 and 150 inches. The split-pin assemblies are secured in counterbores in the lower flange. The tool includes an upper deck and a lower deck. The LGT is suspended from the upper deck from pins which engage holes in the upper flange. With the LGT so suspended the lower flange extends into the lower deck in position to be processed for the replacement. A rotary hydraulic cylinder is provided in the upper deck to rotate the LGT in positions to be processed by other tools involved in the replacement and also so that both of the old split-pin assemblies which are spaced 180.degree. around the periphery of the LGT may be replaced by a single set of robotic tools. A hydraulic lift cylinder is also provided at the upper level to raise the LGT so that it clears the pins when the LGT is to be rotated. The lift cylinder also raises the LGT to clear pins, accessible to the crane which transports the LGT, on which the LGT is positioned temporarily and from which it is moved to the processing positioning pins. The lower deck has a clamp for clamping the lower flange during processing. There is also a pin-puller and expellor which is pivotal from an "in" position, in which it is under a split-pin assembly being processed, in position to pull out a fragment of an old split-pin assembly and expel the fragment into a trash chute. The pin-puller and expellor has a plunger which serves to eject the fragment and in the absence of a fragment a split-pin in the counterbore serves to center the LGT for processing.

A pick-and-put tool, new-nut hopper and pin-insertion/torque tool for completing the installation of the new split-pin assembly in a lower guide tube under water after the old split-pin assembly has been severed into fragments. One fragment, located in the upper counterbore of the LGT, includes a portion of the old nut and the portion of the pin on which it is threaded. The pick-and-put tool includes a clamp and hydraulic cylinders for moving the clamp between a home position and an advanced position and for pivoting the clamp in each position. There is also a cylinder for raising or lowering the clamp in each position. The pick-and-put tool has stops which stop the movement of the clamp precisely in the home position or the advanced position and in their pivoted positions. The pick-and-put tool is mounted in the pool such that it can properly align with both the LGT and hopper. The clamp is first moved from the home position to the advanced position. In this position the clamp is precisely set by a stop to be pivoted into engagement with the LGT thus locating the jaws of the clamp about the fragment. After the clamp engages the fragment it is raised, raising the fragment from its counterbore in the LGT and clearing the LGT. The clamp is then returned to the home position where it is lowered and the fragment is released into a trash chute. After the upper counterbore is cleaned, the clamp is pivoted and precisely stopped so that it engages a new nut in the hopper. The clamp is raised then and is moved to the advanced position and then pivoted over the counterbore. The new nut is deposited in the counterbore.

The work station includes a plurality of robotic tools which are remotely actuable from a robotic command center outside of the pool to position the guide tube precisely for a replacement operation, to fragment the old split-pin assemblies and dispose of the fragments under water, and to install a new split-pin assembly. The lower-guide-tube positioning means has a hydraulic cylinder, also remotely actuable externally to the pool, for rotating the guide tube so that it may be oriented properly to be processed by different tools in succession and also so that both split-pin assemblies in each guide tube may be replaced by the same set of tools.

The apparatus further provides a plurality of centrifugal spray heads including at least a first centrifugal spray head mounted in the housing and supplied with the liquid composition under pressure for directing the liquid composition onto one or more fibers of the fan of fibers passing a first location of the path. The plurality of centrifugal spray heads further includes at least a second centrifugal spray head mounted in the housing and being supplied with the liquid composition under pressure to direct the liquid composition onto one or more fibers of the fan of fibers passing a second location of the path.
