The present invention is intended to provide an ethylene copolymer having excellent mechanical properties and moldability, a process for preparing the copolymer, a resin composition containing the copolymer and uses thereof. The ethylene copolymer has the following properties: the copolymer comprises 90 to 99% by mol of ethylene constituent units and 1 to 60% by mol of C3-20 &agr;-olefin constituent units; the ratio (Mz/Mw) of a Z average molecular weight (Mz) to a weight-average molecular weight (Mw), each molecular weight being measured by GPC, is in the range of 10 to 30, and said ratio (Mz/Mw) and the ratio (Mw/Mn) of a weight-average molecular weight (Mw) to a number-average molecular weight (Mn), each molecular weight being measured by GPC, satisfy the relation (Mz/Mw)>(Mw/Mn); the intrinsic viscosity is in the range of 0.5 to 9 dl/g; the ratio (n*0.01/n*8) of a melt viscosity (&eegr;*0.01) at a shear rate of 0.01 rad/sec, as measured at 190° C., to a melt viscosity (&eegr;*8) at a shear rate of 8 rad/sec, as measured at 190° C., and the intrinsic viscosity (&eegr;) satisfy the relation (&eegr;*0.01/&eegr;*8)≧0.893×(&eegr;)+1.0; and the absolute value of an activation energy (Ea) of a shift factor of melt viscoelasticity is not more than 4×104 J/mol.K.

An ethylene (co)polymer of the present invention is a (co)polymer with excellent moldability and mechanical properties and either an ethylene homopolymer or a copolymer of ethylene and an α-olefin of 4 to 20 carbon atoms. The (co)polymer has methyl branches measured by 13C-NMR less than 0.1 in number per 1,000 carbon atoms and Mw/Mn measured by GPC not lower than 1.8 and lower than 4.5. The (co)polymer is either an ethylene homopolymer or a copolymer of ethylene and an α-olefin of 3 to 20 carbon atoms. The melt tension (MT) and the swell ratio (SR) satisfy the relation; log(MT)>12.9−7.15×SR; and the intrinsic viscosity ([η]) and the melt flow rate (MFR) satisfy the relation; [η]>1.85×MFR−0.192 in the case of MFR 1.85×MFR−0.213 in the case of MFR≧1. Such an ethylene (co)polymer can be usable for various molding applications and especially suitable for pipes.

The present invention provides an olefin polymer having a narrow molecular weight distribution and a specific molecular weight, an olefin polymer having a functional group introduced at the terminal, a tapered polymer containing a segment wherein monomer composition continuously changes in the polymer chain, an olefin polymer having different segments which are bonded to each other, and a process for preparing these polymers. The olefin polymers of the invention are polymers of olefins of 2 to 20 carbon atoms and have a number-average molecular weight of not less than 500 and Mw/Mn of not more than 1.5.
