Abstract: A system for stimulating the healing of tissue comprises a porous pad positioned within a wound cavity, and an airtight dressing secured over the pad, so as to provide an airtight seal to the wound cavity. A proximal end of a conduit is connectable to the dressing. A distal end of the conduit is connectable to a negative pressure source, which may be an electric pump housed within a portable housing, or wall suction. A canister is positioned along the conduit to retain exudates suctioned from the wound site during the application of negative pressure. A controller for automated oscillation of pressure over time is provided to further enhance and stimulate the healing of an open wound. A power management motor control for varying pump drive frequency and managing a portable power supply is provided to increase battery life and improve patient mobility.

Abstract: An abdominal wound dressing and methods of use are described that enable the application of negative pressure to the wound site in a healing manner while also limiting the formation of adhesions that would prevent the removal of the dressing. The dressing comprises a layer of porous foam material enclosed by sheets of elastomeric material punctuated by a number of appropriately placed holes. Multiple layers of porous foam may also be used. A suction tube connector is provided on an upper surface of a layer of foam for connection to a negative pressure source. At least one layer of foam is enclosed in elastomeric material and is placed in direct contact with the tissue within the open wound. Fluids are drawn by negative pressure through the holes positioned in the elastomeric envelope and through the foam.

Abstract: A therapeutic apparatus for stimulating the healing of a wound site includes a polyurethane foam positioned at the wound site and a connector having a disc-like cup and an elbow-shaped spout. The connector is positioned in contact with the polyurethane foam, and the elbow-shaped spout is configured for connection to a tube that is capable of delivering negative pressure through the elbow-shaped spout and to the polyurethane foam. The therapeutic apparatus further includes a drape having a hole, the drape being positioned over the connector such that the elbow-shaped spout extends through the hole in the drape.
