An image reading device includes a blank elimination processing portion that performs blank elimination processing for eliminating image data of an original document if a preset blank detection area in the original document is blank and a frame erasure processing portion that performs frame erasure processing for correcting image data of an original document so that any image in an area other than a preset effective image area in the original document does not appear. The blank elimination processing portion performs resetting in which a superimposition area where the preset blank detection area and the preset effective image area are superimposed on each other is set as a new blank detection area.

A reading control portion reads an image in reading range including image regions of an entire document sheet image in both state where a document sheet is not tilted and a state where the document sheet is tilted at predetermined maximum tilt angle. A first blank sheet determination processing portion is able to determine whether the image read by the reading control portion is a blank sheet image, based on an image of a first determination region which is included in both the image region of the entire document sheet image in the state where the document sheet is not tilted and the image region of the entire document sheet image in the state where the document sheet is tilted at the maximum tilt angle. A first tilt correction processing portion executes no tilt correction processing for the document sheet image when the read image is a blank sheet image.

In response to a reading start instruction, a second size detection processing portion detects a predetermined maximum sheet size for which reading can be performed by an image reading portion, among sheet sizes having the same size in a main scanning direction as that of a document sheet indicated by an output signal from a document sheet width sensor. A first blank sheet determination processing portion sets a first determination region corresponding to the sheet size, and a control portion causes the image reading portion to perform a reading operation. If image information of the first determination region is obtained, the first blank sheet determination processing portion determines whether a document sheet image is a blank sheet image, based on the image information. A sheet conveyance device includes a sheet placing portion, a guide member, a signal obtaining portion, and a notification portion. On the sheet placing portion, a sheet to be conveyed is placed. The guide member is disposed on the sheet placing portion so as to move in a width direction vertical to a sheet conveyance direction, and restricts, in the width direction, a position of the sheet on the sheet placing portion. The signal obtaining portion obtains an electric signal with a value corresponding to a position of the guide member. The notification portion, when a difference between the value and any of thresholds that are set in advance based on each sheet size in the width direction for determination of the size of the sheet, is equal to or smaller than a predetermined reference value, notifies that the sheet is separated from the guide member.

An image reading apparatus includes a tray to place a document, a conveying mechanism for a document, a reader for a document image, a detector for detecting a sheet jam, an image processor and a controller. The image processor performs an image processing for removing document smear from an image read by the reader. The controller controls a document conveying operation by the conveying mechanism and a document reading operation by the reader. If a jammed document is removed and the document is placed again on the document tray after the detector detects a sheet jam, the controller performs a sheet jam recovery processing for causing the conveying mechanism to convey the document again and causing the reader to read the image of the document. The image processor performs the image processing on the image of the jammed document read by the reader during the sheet jam recovery processing.
