An ink jet recording head, which can be used in a recording apparatus, is manufactured by preparing a first base plate provided with an energy generating structure for generating energy to discharge ink, preparing a second base plate provided with a discharge opening plate member on which are to be formed ink discharge openings for discharging the ink and recessed portions for forming ink flow paths, the ink flow paths being communicated with the discharge openings, and applying an ink repellant treatment on a surface of the discharge opening plate at a side where the ink is to be discharged in at least an area where the discharge openings are to be formed. The discharge opening is formed on the discharge opening plate by irradiating a laser beam on a rear surface of the discharge opening plate at the opposite side from where the ink is discharged, and the first base plate and second base plate are connected so that the energy generating structure and recessed portion face one another to form the ink flow paths.

An ink jet head cartridge include an ink container and a porous material contained in the container for retaining the ink. A process for filling the ink container includes the steps of supplying ink in a quantity greater than that which the porous material can retain through a first port and removing through a second port at least a quantity of ink which the porous material cannot retain. The process can also be performed through a single port. At least one of the ports can also be used for communicating with a recording head portion of the cartridge.

A process for preparing and packaging an ink jet cartridge in a package container is disclosed. The ink jet cartridge is filled with ink and has an outer frame, a discharge port for discharging the ink and an electrical connecting portion through which a recording signal is supplied to discharge the ink through the discharge port. The package container includes a recess member having a recess portion in which the ink jet cartridge is received, a cap member joined to the recess member to close the recess portion, and a rib for supporting the outer frame of the ink jet cartridge. The rib is provided on the recess member and/or the cap member, and supports the ink jet cartridge so that the discharge port and/or the electrical connecting portion are prevented from contacting the recess member and the cap member. The process includes the steps of providing the ink jet cartridge filled with ink, providing the package container, positioning the ink jet cartridge filled with ink in the recess member of the package container and closing the recess member in which the ink jet cartridge is positioned with the cap member.
