An image density control method for an electrophotographic apparatus is disclosed which prepares a white pattern region and a black pattern region on a photoconductive element whose electrostatic latent images are far different from each other in potential. Values relating to image densities individually associated with the two pattern regions are sensed and, based on the sensed values, parameters relating to image processing which effect image density are controlled. When any of the sensed values does not lie in a predetermined range, it is suitably compensated.

The method forms at least two pattern areas having different potentials on the surface of the photoconductive element by at least one of various means for forming charge patterns which include controlling the energization of the charger, controlling an illumination lamp and projecting an image pattern. In different ranges respectively assigned to the two pattern areas, there is digitized at least one of values associated with an image density which include a surface potential of the pattern area before development, toner density of the pattern area after development, surface potential of the pattern area after development and image density of an area of a transferred image which corresponds to the pattern area. The digitized data of the different patterns are compared with each other.

An automatic control system for an offset printing machine includes a process execution instructions generating circuit having latched therein instructions for executing various operation processes and adapted to shift from one operation phase to another for successively generating process execution instructions, so that an ink forming and master plate feeding process, an inking process, a transfer-printing process, a printing process, and a master plate ejecting and cleaning process can be automatically executed in correct order. The number of times for executing each of the etching, inking, transfer-printing and cleaning processes can be adjusted in a process setting structure. When a master plate feeding error detecting signal is generated, the process execution instructions generating circuit is reset to an initial condition of stop instructions which prevailed prior to actuation of a start switch. When a master plate ejection error signal or other misoperation indicating signal is generated, the process execution instructions generating circuit remains latched to the current operation process, and a lamp is lighted to indicate the process in which misoperation has occurred. The period of time for moistening an etching roller can be determined depending on the number of copies to be produced. The control system allows the offset printing machine to manually execute any operation process or processes as desired.

First, edge information sampled from the input data is allocated to corresponding pixel positions of the output data with priority. A residual gradation value is determined by subtracting a value corresponding to the edge information already allocated from the average gradation of the input data, and black pixels and white pixels are alternately allocated to the remaining pixel positions of the output data except for the edge region, in accordance with the ratio of the number of those remaining pixels to the residual gradation value. When the region except for the edge region is divided into a plurality of regions, an average gradation for each of the divided regions is determined and a residual gradation value is distributed to each of the divided regions in accordance with the ratio between the average gradations, followed by allocating black pixels and white pixels to each of the divided regions in accordance with the ration of the distributed residual gradation value to the number of pixels in that region.
