A base station transmits, in addition to a pilot channel, signals which are multiplexed with pilot symbols inserted in the respective signals in communication channels. As the transmission of the pilot channel as a reference signal for coherent detection is unnecessary with high power so as to attain high reliability, the pilot channel can be transmitted with low power by means of weight in comparison with the communication channel, so that interference with the communication channel of any other station is reduced. Moreover, accurate coherent detection can be made from the pilot symbol inserted in the communication channel on the mobile station side.

An error detection method used for digital communication which intends to reduce the probability of outputting the speech obtained by decoding the data that includes an error. The speech data encoded in an error detection code and an error correction code is transmitted. On a receiving side, the data with an error detected in either one of decoding of the error correction code and CRC checking is interpolated so that it is possible to prevent the data which actually includes an error from being decoded into speech as it is.

Next, another short spreading code indicative of a timing of reverse and forward link switching is specified, where the short spreading code is multiplexed at the same position as that of the detected symbol. The detection of the symbols spread with only these spreading codes enables to acquire synchronization of the long spreading code, synchronization of switching of reverse and forward links, and synchronization of a transmission frame. It is thereby possible to reduce synchronization acquisition time for the long spreading and an easy planning of base station locations without decreasing the frequency utilization efficiency.

On the encoding side, after a fixed bit of 0 or 1 was inserted into information signal series to be convolutional correction encoded, the resultant information signal series is convolutionally encoded. On the decoding side, by using the fixed bit inserting position stored in a fixed bit inserting position storing circuit, the information signal series is decoded while limiting the state transition corresponding to the bit position at which the information bit is the fixed bit into only one kind that is decided by the value of the fixed bit.

The invention provides greater error correction capability in an error correction encoding/decoding system of a digital mobile telephone or so forth. In a viterbi decoding system at a receiver side, a branch metric is calculated and stored without selecting a path with respect to a plurality of branches corresponding to a parameter having a correlation between frames. Also, by utilizing a separately stored parameter value in a previous frame, a transition probability of the parameter value in the current frame is obtained, a metric value of a path is converted and added to an accumulated path metric value up to the previous branch, a comparison of the metric values at various states is performed to select the path having higher likelihood to perform decoding by maximum likelihood decoding.
