Described is a process for preparing cyclohexadiene derivatives having the generic formula: ##STR1## wherein R is one of C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl, R.sub.1 is methyl when R.sub.2 is hydrogen comprising the step of reacting a 1-alkyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexa-1,3-diene or a 1-alkyl-3,4,4-trimethylcyclohexa-1,3-diene with oxygen in the presence of light, an ultraviolet sensitizer, and a basic catalyst; and fractionally distilling the resulting product.

Described is a process for preparing cyclohexadiene derivatives having the generic formula: ##STR1## by means of reacting a compound having the structure: ##STR2## with mineral acid selected from the group consisting of dilute hydrochloric acid, dilute phosphoric acid and dilute sulfuric acid; wherein R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl. The products produced by this process are useful for their organoleptic properties in perfumes, foodstuffs and tobaccos.
