    摘要: An automated system for transporting nuclear fuel elements between fuel element assembly stations without contaminating the area outside the sealed assembly stations. The system comprises a plurality of assembly stations connected together by an elongated horizontal sealing mechanism and an automatic transport mechanism for transporting a nuclear fuel element in a horizontal attitude between the assembly stations while the open end of the fuel element extends through the sealing mechanism into the assembly station enclosure. The sealing mechanism allows the fuel element to be advanced by the transport mechanism while limiting the escape of radioactive particles from within the assembly station enclosure.

    摘要: A pellet turning apparatus for facilitating surface inspection of nuclear fuel pellets includes a pellet turner assembly and a pellet supply tray interface assembly. The pellet turner assembly includes a pellet turner deck and a swivel mechanism supporting the deck. The pellet turner deck is composed of a base frame mounted on the swivel mechanism, a plurality of elongated laterally-spaced pellet channel-defining members extending between and mounted at the opposite ends of the frame, a pellet rolling plate supported on the frame below the pellet channel-defining members, and an actuating mechanism coupled to the pellet rolling plate for moving the plate in oscillatory direction substantially perpendicular to the pellet channels for producing in situ turning of the pellets. The interface assembly is mounted to a pellet loading end of the pellet turner deck. The interface assembly is operable for disposing a pellet transfer end of a pellet supply tray at a desired elevation relative to the pellet loading end of the pellet turner deck. The interface assembly includes a tray elevating mechanism having engaging elements for coupling to the transfer end of the pellet supply tray, and an actuating cam mechanism coupled for moving the elevating mechanism to raise or lower the engaging elements and thereby raise or lower the transfer end of the supply tray respectively above or below the loading end of the pellet turner deck.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for inspecting cylindrically configured pellets for surface defects is disclosed. At least one axially extending linear portion of the peripheral surface of the pellet is optically sensed. A set of discrete digital values representative of the optically sensed linear portion of the pellet surface is generated and the set of digital values is compared to a predetermined standard. Groups of digital values representative of adjacent locations on the surface of the pellet having values greater or less than the predetermined standard are identified. The area of adjacent digital values having a value above the standard, and the area of adjacent digital values having a value below the standard are calculated and compared to a predetermined area. The pellet is rejected when the calculated area exceeds a predetermined area. During inspection, the pellet is moved axially through an inspection station by first and second horizontally positioned substantially parallel and longitudinally extending pellet support rolls. The rolls are spaced a distance from each other less than the diameter of a pellet to be transferred. The rolls are rotated upward and outward from each other and chain dogs are positioned between the spaced rolls for engaging a pellet and moving the pellet along between the spaced pellet support rolls.

    摘要: A pellet collating system includes a tray positioning station located adjacent a pellet collating line with a tray transfer robot located therebetween. The tray positioning station has mobile carts lodged thereat, some supporting pellet supply trays and others supporting pellet storage trays. Pellets on one supply tray and later placed on one storage tray are of the same enrichment. Pellet enrichments on some trays are different from on others. The collating line includes pellet input, work and output stations arranged in tandem. The robot is operable to transfer supply and storage trays one at a time to and from the positioning station and the respective input and output stations. An input sweep head is operable for sweeping pellets onto the work station from a supply tray on the input station. A gripping and measuring head is operable for measuring a desired length of pellets on the work station and then separating the measured desired length of pellets from the remaining pellets, if any. An output sweep head is operable for sweeping the measured lengths of pellets from the work station onto a storage tray at the output station. The output sweep head is also operable for sweeping the remaining pellets, if any, from the work station back onto the one supply tray disposed at the input station.

    摘要: A pellet collating system includes a tray positioning station located adjacent a pellet collating line with a tray transfer robot located therebetween.     摘要: The tube plug comprises a shell having a tapered inner surface against which an externally tapered expander member moves by application of a pulling force. The motion of the expander member relative to the shell causes the shell to expand into contact with a heat exchange tube thereby plugging the tube. The expander member is formed from a hardened metal with tangentially blended leading radius and a self-locking trailing edge which provides for ease in expanding the shell while preventing inadvertent unlocking of the plug. The shell has a substantially uniform wall thickness throughout the portion of the shell which experiences expansion so that the force necessary to perform the expanding process does not increase beyond the strength limitations of the installation equipment as the expander member is moved through the shell. The shell also has a plurality of lands on the outside surface thereof whose depth increases from closed end to open end of the shell so that a uniform wall thickness can be maintained in that region while allowing the lands to contact the inner surface of the heat exchange tube.
