A cooking apparatus and method thereof capable of performing a cooking process based upon a cooking condition corresponding to the amount of food introduced into a cooking chamber when the cooking process is performed using a bar code printed on a food package to be cooked. The cooking method includes reading a bar code storing a reference weight of food to be cooked and a cooking condition based on the reference weight, sensing the weight of food introduced into a cooking chamber, calculating a number of servings of the food introduced into the cooking chamber by using the weight of the food introduced into the cooking chamber and the reference weight of the food, and changing the cooking condition to correspond to the number of servings of the food introduced into the cooking chamber, when the number of servings of the food introduced into the cooking chamber varies from a number of servings corresponding to the reference weight of the food, to thereby set a final cooking condition is corresponding to the changed cooking condition.

A microwave oven cooking food using a bar code, and a method controlling same. The microwave oven comprises a bar code scanner for obtaining bar code data from the bar code attached to the food; and a controller for obtaining cooking data corresponding to the microwave oven from the bar code data, setting cooking conditions based on the obtained cooking data, and performing the cooking of the food according to the set cooking conditions. Accordingly, it is possible to develop cooking sets regardless of the manufacturing times of foods, and food producers can put foods applied compatibly to plural cooking sets on the market and easily control inventory.

A fan chamber is defined by recessing a rear wall of the cooking cavity at a predetermined area to a predetermined depth. An air circulation fan and a heater are installed in the fan chamber. The air circulation fan circulates air of the cooking cavity. The heater heats the air in the fan chamber. A chamber cover is mounted to the rear wall of the cooking cavity to cover an open front of the fan chamber. The chamber cover has a plurality of air suction ports at a central area thereof, with a plurality of air distribution ports provided along an edge of the chamber cover to guide the air from the fan chamber to the edge of the chamber cover so as to discharge the air to the cooking cavity.

The apparatus includes an operating panel provided on the front surface of the microwave oven, a bar code scanner installed in the operating panel and projecting light to the bar code attached to a package of food to obtain data of the bar code, and a main controller for controlling a cooking operation for cooking the food according to the data of the bar code obtained by the bar code scanner. The apparatus simply and rapidly performs the cooking of food using the bar code, increases the bar code recognition distance thereof, and is easily and economically operated.
