The present invention concerns a runflat device for a tubeless mounted assembly for a motor vehicle and an assembly incorporating said device. A device in accordance with the invention for a unit comprises a wheel rim having a plurality of pieces and a tire cover comprising beads mounted against the flanges of the rim, the device comprising: a support ring for mounting around the rim to support the tire cover following a drop in inflation pressure and divided into at least two ring sectors; and means for locking said beads against the flanges to connect the sectors to the beads. The device is such that each ring sector comprises a rigid wall which defines at least one internal volume and which defines the lateral faces of the ring sector.

A method of lightening a run-flat device for a motor vehicle wheel, in particular having a separable flat rim, the method consisting in configuring the run-flat device in a sandwich structure comprising a rigid inner annular portion, an intermediate annular portion of flexible or elastically deformable material, and a rigid outer annular portion, in such a manner that in run-flat mode, all of the forces transmitted by the rigid outer portion are distributed over the entire circumference of the intermediate portion, thereby enabling the thickness of the intermediate portion to be reduced and enabling the run-flat device to be made lighter in weight. The invention also provides a run-flat device implementing the above method.

The invention provides a runflat device for a motor vehicle, the device comprising a ring for mounting inside a tire on a one-piece non-standard wheel rim that presents a drop center, an inner flange and an outer flange, said ring being made as at least two sectors each having a radially inner zone and a radially outer zone, wherein the sectors of the ring are independent of one another, and wherein each sector is fixed to the rim via its radially inner zone.

A process for manufacturing this device is disclosed as is a fitted assembly for a motor vehicle comprising the rim, the cover and the device. The device has a belt having two ends and a catching blocks for connecting the ends together, which is intended to clamp the belt of annular shape around the rim well, and this device is such that the belt includes a plurality of filling elements, spaced apart between the ends, which elements are designed to at least partly fill the well and are connected together via at least one flexible linking element intended to form an annular sector around the well.

The device includes an annular support structure for mounting around the rim to support the cover, the structure subdivided in at least two ring sectors to form the structure by juxtaposition in the circumferential direction thereof, and means for locking the beads against the flanges to connect the ring sectors to the beads.
