An apparatus and method that provide consistent output across a plurality of different hard copy output devices which may be included in a system comprising an image data source and a hard copy output device. The image data source supplies image data to a printable image data adjusting apparatus. The image data supplied may be in a device-dependent color space or a device-independent color space. If the image data is in a device-dependent color space, the printable image data adjusting apparatus first converts the image data into device-independent image data and stores it in memory as target image data. If the image data is already device-independent image data, the image data are simply stored in the memory of the printable image data adjusting apparatus as target image data. The printable image data adjusting apparatus then uses the target image data to generate printable image data. The hard copy output device uses the printable image data to generate a hard copy image. The hard copy image is then passed within the optical field of a sensor that detects device-independent image data values of the hard copy image. The detected device-independent image data values are then compared against the target image data to generate color adjustment factors. The color adjustment factors are then used to produce a hard copy image having detected device-independent image data values that more closely represent the target image data. The apparatus and method may be implemented in real-time with or without human intervention.

A color marking device including a control system for calibration of the device based upon dynamic color balance control of an output image. The system comprises a front end converter for converting an input signal representative of a target image comprising a preselected color into a device-dependent control signal in accordance with a device TRC, a color marking device for outputting an output image in response to the control signal, a sensor for measuring a parameter from the output image representative of a color of the output image, and, a point-wise controller for comparing the parameter with a corresponding parameter from the target image and constructing adjusted controlled points for the device TRC when the measured parameter and the corresponding parameter vary by a preselected value, a color balance controller for constructing an adjusted device TRC from the controlled points, whereby subsequently generated output images are output with the adjusted device TRC and, more accurately represent target input images.

The look up table incorporates a covariance matrix of elements containing n tone reproduction samples. A matrix multiplier responds to sensed developed patch samples and to the look up table to reproduce a complete tone reproduction curve. A control reacts to the reproduced tone reproduction curve to adjust machine quality.

Fundamental machine functions such as the Tone Reproduction Curve need to be divided into regions of smaller units so that each unit can be interrelated to some aspects of the internal machine process. A first step toward that is by decomposing measured TRC in terms of what are known as "orthogonal basis functions". Two significant applications for orthogonal basis functions may be extensive use in color controls to maintain color consistency for every page, every time and all the time. The use of basis functions might also lead to a new soft sensor for use in certain machines.

A mapping system for converting an input signal value to an output value wherein certain outputs are predetermined to be critical. An engine for converting input values to output values is associated with an input value transforming system wherein certain input values corresponding to the critical output values are transformed prior to input to the engine for adjusting the input value so that the engine generates a particularly desired output. The transforming comprises selecting a set of basis functions for effecting a warping of input values near the input value corresponding to the critical output value. The basis functions determine the extent and gradient of input value adjustment for nearby values to the critical value. The basis functions are included within an objective function defining the purpose of the system and the functions are solved to generate the desired adjusted input value. The system has particular applicability to color gamut mapping in a print system wherein output color needs to be accurately printed and colors nearby the critical color can be generated with minimal image artifacts.

A feedback control system controls developability of a xerographic imaging device that uses optical sensors for measuring development values based upon a target value. The feedback control system includes a controller device and a feedforward device. The controller device includes an input summing node, a gain device, an integrator and a nominal summing node which are serially connected in communication with each other. The input summing node, the gain device and the integrator are operative in combination with each other to receive and process the measured value and the target value to provide an new corrected actuator value to the integrator summing node. The feedforward device is connected to the nominal summing node and receives and responds to the target value to output a nominal actuator value to the nominal summing node. The nominal summing node combines the new corrected actuator value and the nominal actuator value to provide an actuator value to the xerographic imaging device for controlling the developability of the xerographic imaging device. A method for controlling developability of a xerographic imaging device is also described.

An online printing parameter establishment apparatus is used with a xerographic printing device for printing high quality prints given a target value. The xerographic printing device is capable of producing at least one print control patch on a photoreceptor and is capable of sensing a value of the at least one print control patch. The xerographic printing device has a plurality of sets of inherent performance characteristic values. The online printing parameter establishment apparatus includes a controller device and a switch device. The controller device is operative to produce a first database of different ones of the sensed values. Each sensed value is associated with a respective one of the plurality of sets of inherent performance characteristic values based upon the target value. The controller device is also operative to produce a second database of a plurality of control values. Each one of the control values is extracted from a respective one of the sensed values and the associated set of inherent performance characteristic values. Further, the controller device selects one of the control values which is closely comparable to the target value. A method for online establishment of print control parameters to render high quality prints using a xerographic printing process is also described.

An image quality control apparatus controls quality of xerographic images formed by a xerographic imaging system onto a recording medium when at least one sensor which is operative to provide signals to the xerographic imaging system for quality control malfunctions. The image quality control apparatus includes a controller device in communication with the xerographic imaging system. The controller includes a data collection device, a determining device and an input generating device. The data collection device collects and processes sensor data received from the at least one sensor while the at least one sensor is operative. The determining device determines whether the at least one sensor malfunctions. The input generating device generates a controller input signal by using the sensor data collected by the data collection device and provides the controller input signal to the xerographic imaging system to control quality of the xerographic images when the determining device determines that the at least one sensor has malfunctioned. A method for controlling quality of a xerographic print after malfunction of a quality control sensor is also described.
