    Abstract: An illumination system for a non-emissive display panel is provided. The illumination system includes a light source array including a plurality of individually addressable illumination units, an illumination unit being configured to emit a first light beam having a first solid angle. The illumination system also includes a concentrator array coupled with the light source array and including a plurality of concentrators, a concentrator being configured to condition the first light beam into a second light beam associated with a second solid angle that is smaller than the first solid angle, the second light beam providing a substantially uniform illumination at an exit aperture of the concentrator. The illumination system also includes an imaging assembly including one or more optical elements configured to image the substantially uniform illumination at the exit aperture of the concentrator onto the non-emissive display panel.

    Abstract: A system includes a light outputting device configured to output a divergent light. The system also includes a lens configured to convert the divergent light incident thereon from a first side of the lens to a collimated light substantially covering a light receiving region located at a second side of the lens, the lens including a plurality of Fresnel structures formed on at least one of a first lens surface or a second lens surface of the lens. Each Fresnel structure includes a slope facet and a draft facet. At least one of the draft facets is a first type of draft facet configured to not interact with a ray of the divergent light that is non-parallel with the at least one of the draft facets.

    Abstract: A method includes projecting a single color illumination light having a first color on a liquid crystal on silicon display device, thereby obtaining a single color image light having the first color from the liquid crystal on silicon display device. The method also includes receiving image light having at least a second color that is different from the first color from a display panel that is different from a liquid crystal on silicon display device and combining the single color image light and the image light for projection toward an eye.
