Abstract: A multi-focal system includes a display pixel array, a pixelated polarization array, and a Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PBP) lens. The display pixel array includes a first display pixels generating first display light and a second display pixels generating second display light. The pixelated polarization array has first pixels and second pixels. The first pixels are aligned with the first display pixels to generate a first polarized light having a first polarization orientation. The second pixels are aligned with the second display pixels to generate a second polarized light having a second polarization orientation different from the first polarization orientation. The PBP lens is configured to focus the first polarized light having the first polarization orientation to a first focal length and focus the second polarized light having the second polarization orientation to a second focal length that is greater than the first focal length.

Abstract: Various embodiments set forth light emission display elements, and display devices that include such display elements. In some embodiments, a display element includes an electroluminescent light source and a pair of reflective elements that form a resonant cavity for a particular range of wavelengths and/or a particular polarization of light. One or both of the reflective elements can include meta-reflectors, such as anisotropic meta-reflectors or chiral meta-reflectors. An optional waveplate can be placed between the reflective elements to adjust the polarization state of light emitted by the display element.

Abstract: A device includes a polymer stabilized blue phase liquid crystal (“PS-BPLC”) layer. The device also includes an alignment structure coupled with the PS-BPLC layer. LC molecules disposed in contact with the alignment structure are configured to have a spatially varying in-plane orientation pattern that is at least partially defined by the alignment structure. The PS-BPLC layer is configured to forwardly deflect a polarized light having a predetermined handedness, and transmit a polarized light having a handedness that is orthogonal to the predetermined handedness.

Abstract: A device includes a light source configured to generate an image light. The device also includes a lens assembly coupled with the light source. The lens assembly includes a mirror configured to transmit a first portion of the image light and reflect a second portion of the image light. The lens assembly also includes a reflective polarizer including a birefringent medium with a chirality and configured to substantially reflect the first portion of the image light output from the mirror as a polarized light having a predetermined handedness toward the mirror. The lens assembly further includes a lens disposed between the mirror and the reflective polarizer and configured to provide an optical power to the image light.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method may include (1) causing a radar component to emit one or more radar signals and (2) causing the radar component to analyze one or more return signals. Abstract: A polarization conversion device includes a geometric phase grating and an angular selective waveplate. The geometric phase grating includes a first liquid crystal layer and is configured to diffract a unpolarized or partially polarized incident light beam into a first light beam and a second light beam (e.g., in two different diffraction orders). The first light beam is characterized by a first polarization state and propagates in a first direction. The second light beam is characterized by a second polarization state and propagates in a second direction. The angular selective waveplate includes a second liquid crystal layer, and functions as a zero or full-wave plate for the first light beam incident in the first direction and a half-wave plate for the second light beam incident in the second direction.

Abstract: A multilayer organic thin film includes a plurality of biaxially-oriented layers, where each layer is characterized by mutually orthogonal refractive indices, n1≠n2≠n3. In example structures, the corresponding in-plane refractive indices of adjacent layers may be rotated with respect to each other by a predetermined angle. Such a multilayer may be incorporated into a circular reflective polarizer, for example, which may be used in display systems to provide high broadband efficiency and high off-axis contrast. In an example process, individual organic thin films may be molded, and then oriented and stacked to form a multilayer.
