The present invention relates to spherical solid catalyst components for the polymerization of olefins, comprising a titanium compound, supported on a magnesium halide, containing more than one Ti-halogen link and optionally containing groups different from halogen in an amount lower than 0.5 mole per mole of Ti. Spherical solid compounds of the invention are characterized by having a surface area, measured by the BET method, of lower than 70 m2/g, a total porosity, measured by the mercurium method, higher than 0.5 cm3/g and a pore radius such that at least 50% have values higher than 800 Å.

Catalytic components for copolymerizing ethylene with alpha-olefins, or alpha-olefins with one another, and possibly with a diene as a termonomer, suitable for producing saturated and unsaturated elastomeric copolymers are disclosed. The catalytic components are compounds obtained by the reaction of:(1) a magnesium compound having the formula:R'.sub.y MgX.sub.n (OR).sub.2-n (wherein R, R'=alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl; X=Cl, Br; n is from 0 to 1.8, y is from 0 to 1, and n+y=2), or(2) a Mg-alcohol adduct;with a titanium compound having the formula:Ti(OR).sub.Z X.sub.4-Z'wherein X and R are as defined above and Z is from 0 to 1, the compounds being charcterized by a Mg/Ti ratio of from 0.5 to 50 and an OR/Ti ratio of from 0.7 to 10. The copolymers produced using these catalytic components are endowed with improved tension-set characteristics in the vulcanized state.

Crystalline copolymers of ethylene and alpha-olefins CH.sub.2 .dbd.CHR in which R is an alkyl group having 2 to 8 carbon atoms, containing 0.5 to 3% by moles of polymerized alpha-olefin and having a density lower than 0.945 g/cc are obtained by polymerizing, in the gas phase, mixtures of ethylene and the alpha-olefins in contact with catalysts prepared from (1) Ti compounds supported on Mg halides and (2) organometallic compounds, which are active in the polymerization of ethylene but exhibit little, if any, activity in the homo- or copolymerization of the alpha-olefins.
