摘要: Apparatus and methods for providing both commercial-free content and commercially sponsored content in a flexible manner to various subscriber classes of digital audio radio are presented. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, lower tier subscribers can, for example, sample commercial free content as experienced by higher tier subscribers by means of flexible channel authorization. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention new non-subscribers can be allowed to sample some of the commercial content (such as, when, for example, a default UPC is stored in the radio before shipment) before choosing to subscribe. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, a digital audio radio (receiver) can include a controller operable to receive and store an Uplink Package Code (UPC) in the digital audio radio. The radio can be further operable to receive, for example, a broadcast Package Definition Message (PDM) that maps the stored UPC to a list of authorized channels (obtained via a broadcast Package Authorization List (PAL)) for that receiver. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, a method of channel authorization for digital audio radios can include assigning an Uplink Package Code (UPC) to, and storing the UPC in, a digital audio radio and receiving a broadcast Package Definition Message (PDM) that maps the UPC to a list of authorized channels (from a Package Authorization List (PAL)).

摘要: A method and apparatus detects (516) a baud rate in a digital signal (442). An N-state counter (404) counts at a rate N times the baud rate and the digital signal is sampled (504) to detect transitions of the digital signal. N tallies (202) record how many transitions occur coincident with each of the states of the counter, and a total number of transitions detected is computed (508). M groups (204-210) of the tallies are formed (510) corresponding to contiguous sequential states of the counter, and for each group a group number is calculated (512) indicating how many transitions are recorded in the tallies of the group. Each group is defined (514) transitional if the group number exceeds a percentage (413) of the total number of transitions, and the baud rate is determined present or absent based upon the groups that are defined as transitional.

摘要: A vehicle messaging method (600) and system (100) can include any number of data sources (101-103), an interface (104) that formats messages and addresses from the data sources, and a corresponding number of messaging servers (111-113) that receive targeted messages intended for a predetermined subset of subscribers associated with a vehicle identification number (VIN). Each messaging server can include a corresponding controller (121-123) programmed to assign (604) targeted messages to a predetermined channel and encode (606) the addresses of the targeted messages to the predetermined subset of subscribers using a VIN or portion thereof. The controller can be further programmed to transfer (608) the targeted messages and addresses to a satellite uplink (107) and satellite (110) via a messaging uplink interface (106) for retransmission and reception by a plurality of selective call receivers 109 addressable individually using a predetermined VIN or portion thereof.

摘要: A channel scanning communication receiver (204) operates in a system that transmits information in cycles (104) including subsequences (106). The receiver determines whether to operate in a scanning or locked mode by making (302) signal quality pass/fail decisions for subsequences transmitted in a predetermined group of cycles. A decision is made for a transmission of a subsequence, and subsequence active/inactive decisions are made (304) for the subsequences transmitted in the predetermined group of cycles, based upon the signal quality pass/fail decisions made for the subsequences. The receiver determines (306) whether the system is time-shared or continuous, based upon how many active decisions and inactive decisions are made, and selects (310, 312) the scanning or locked mode in accordance with predetermined rules for time-shared or continuous systems, according to whether the system is time-shared or continuous.

摘要: A system and method for adding images to a wireless audio service. The invention is adapted for use in a system for wirelessly transmitting and receiving an audio data stream and includes an arrangement for providing an image and a mechanism for inserting the image into the data stream prior to transmission thereof. In the illustrative embodiment, a third arrangement is provided for receiving and decoding the data stream to extract and a fourth arrangement is included for displaying the image while the audio signal is output. The fourth arrangement may be a digital radio, i.e., a radio adapted to process digital signals, such as a satellite radio, high definition radio, digital AM or other suitable primarily audio wireless communication system. In a specific embodiment, the invention includes an arrangement for automatically inserting a selected image in the stream. In the illustrative embodiment, this arrangement includes a source selector, an image editor coupled to the source selector, an image resizer, an image compressor, and an arrangement for allowing a user to add text, color, style and/or other information to an image output by the compressor. The invention further includes an arrangement for adding images from an archive to the stream and a graphical picture show composer for providing an image queue. An image server is included for feeding the image queue to the output data stream provided by a system server such as an XM or Sirius satellite radio server.

摘要: A novel and useful apparatus for and method of securely downloading and installing a patch program in a processing device. Each processing device is assigned a unique key embedded therein during manufacture and has knowledge of a shared key. The program patch is encrypted using the shared key and transmitted over a communication link, such as a satellite radio link, to each device. The patch is decrypted using the shared key and re-encrypted using the unique key known only to the device itself. The re-encrypted patch program is stored in nonvolatile memory and upon reset of the device, the encrypted patch contents are read out of the nonvolatile memory, decrypted using the unique key and loaded into patch memory for execution by the processing device.
