The present invention relates to a process for preparing a porous metal organic framework comprising a first and at least one second at least bidentate organic compound coordinated to at least one copper ion, which comprises the steps (a) reaction of a reaction mixture in the liquid phase comprising at least one copper compound and the first at least bidentate organic compound to form an intermediate complex comprising the at least one copper ion and the first at least bidentate organic compound, with the first at least bidentate organic compound being derived from a dicarboxylic acid and having a skeleton which is a hydrocarbon, and (b) reaction of the intermediate complex with the at least second at least bidentate organic compound, with the at least second at least bidentate organic compound being an optionally substituted monocyclic, bicyclic or polycyclic saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon in which at least two ring carbons have been replaced by heteroatoms selected from the group consisting of N, O and S, wherein the reaction mixture in step (a) comprises less than a 3-fold excess of formic acid based on the copper of the copper compound used.
