    摘要: A process for the production of 2,3,5-trimethylbenzoquinone (TMBQ) from 2,3,6-trimethylphenol (TMP) is described, comprising contacting TMP with oxygen or an oxygen containing gas in a medium of water and an aliphatic alcohol having from 5 to 10 carbon atoms in the presence of catalyst of a copper halogen complex represented by the formula as shown below or a mixture of the copper halogen complex and an alkali metal halide or a mixture of the copper halogen complex, an alkali metal halide and cupric hydroxide and/or cuprous chlorideM.sub.l [Cu(II).sub.m X.sub.n ].sub.pwherein M is an alkali metal or ammonium, Cu(II) is a divalent copper, X is a halogen atom, l is an integer of 1 to 3, m is 1 or 2, n is an integer or 3 to 8, p is 1 or 2, and l+2mp=np. The process is carried out in a batch system, a semi-batch system or in a continuous flow system. The third mentioned catalyst system is most effectively utilized in the semi-batch system. The present process yields various advantages; for example, TMBQ can be produced with high selectivity, and since the reaction is performed in a specific medium (the medium is heterogeneous because the alcohols are immiscible or only slightly miscible with water) and TMBQ is soluble in the alcohol layer, while the catalyst is soluble in the water layer, the TMBQ can be easily separated and reuse of the catalyst can be accomplished by a simplified procedure. TMBQ is a useful compound as an intermediate for use in the preparation of Vitamin E.

    摘要: An R-configuration or S-configuration optically active secondary alcohol of the general formula (1), CH3C*H(OH)(CH2)mOCH(CnH2n+1)2  (1) wherein C* is an asymmetric carbon atom, m is an integer of 1 to 3, and n is an integer of 1 to 3, and a process for the production thereof, comprising optical resolution of a corresponding racemic alcohol by asymmetric trans-esterification, specifically using a lipase derived from Candida antarcia microorganism. The present invention can provide the novel optically active secondary alcohol having a methyl group on an asymmetric carbon and an alkoxy terminal having branched alkyl chains formed of the same numbers of carbon atoms, and an economical and simple process for the production thereof.

    摘要: An antiferroelectric liquid crystal cell having a high-speed response and wide viewing angle characteristic free of an image sticking phenomenon is provided. This antiferroelectric liquid crystal cell is composed of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal material held between a pair of parallel substrates. The antiferroelectric liquid crystal material filled between the parallel substrates has such a characteristic that when a sinusoidal voltage value with a changing reference frequency is applied to the antiferroelectric liquid crystal cell, the imaginary part of the complex dielectric constant obtained by Fourier transform of the output voltage value output from the antiferroelectric liquid crystal cell has no local maximum value within the reference frequency range of 100 Hz to 5 kHz. In other words, this characteristic is similar to a characteristic such that when the real part and the imaginary part of the complex dielectric constant are plotted by using a Cole--Cole plot for each frequency, a characteristic curve having no local maximum value within the reference frequency range of 100 Hz to 5 kHz is obtained.
