摘要:
A braking device configured for use with the counterbalancing system of a garage door. The brake device includes a support bracket, a ratchet wheel, a pawl arm, and a biasing spring. The support bracket is rigidly connected to a fixed structure and has a guiding slot. The ratchet wheel is securely mounted about the overhead shaft of the counterbalancing system and has at least one notch. The pawl arm has first and second ends, the first end of the pawl arm being pivotally connected to the support bracket and the second end of the pawl arm cooperating with the guiding slot and being movable with respect to the support bracket along said guiding slot. The first and second ends of the pawl arm are further connected to flanges of a plug on either side of the overhead shaft. The biasing spring is operatively connected between the support bracket and the pawl arm so as to exert a biasing force for biasing the pawl arm towards the ratchet wheel. The pawl arm is devised so that, an element thereof is adjacent to the ratchet wheel, said element being shaped and sized to be removably insertable into at least one notch of the ratchet wheel so as to block rotation of the ratchet wheel, and thus block rotation of the overhead shaft, in the event of a failure of the counterbalancing system of the door. The brake device further includes a shear pin operatively connectable between the support bracket and the pawl arm for maintaining said pawl arm, prior to installation of the brake device onto the counterbalancing system, in an intermediate configuration between the first and second configurations. The shear pin is made of a specific material being breakable when the pawl arm is rotated with respect to the support bracket when the torsional force of the torsional spring transmitted to said pawl arm via the plus has reached a predetermined value, ensuring namely that a predetermined minimal amount of load is present is said torsional spring for counterbalancing purposes.

A drive mechanism for use with an overhead shaft of a sectional door for raising and lowering the door via a rotation of the overhead shaft. The drive mechanism has a support structure, a first gear, a drive shaft, a second gear, a pocket wheel and an actuator. The second gear is interconnected to the first gear so that a rotation of the second gear is transmitted to the first gear and vice versa. The pocket wheel is operable between first and second positions. The second gear is rotatable along a first direction corresponding to a raising of the sectional door and along an opposite second direction corresponding to a lowering of the sectional door. The actuator is used for rotating the pocket wheel about the drive shaft, operating the pocket wheel between the first and second positions, and driving the second gear along the first and second directions when the pocket wheel is in the second and first positions respectively. The drive mechanism includes a first ratchet assembly for blocking rotation of the second gear along the second direction when the pocket wheel is in the second position. The drive mechanism may also include a second ratchet assembly for blocking rotation of the second gear along the first direction when the pocket wheel is in the first position.

A plug mounted at one end of a torsional spring operatively connected to an overhead shaft of a counterbalancing mechanism of a garage door, wherein the plug comprises projecting interlocking means able to cooperate with corresponding matching means of a mating part of the counterbalancing mechanism, so that when the interlocking means of the plug are inserted into the corresponding matching means and when tension is applied to the torsional spring, the interlocking means interlock with said matching means of the mating part, thereby preventing the plug from being readily removed therefrom. The projecting interlocking means thus act as safety means because they provide an automatic locking mechanism which make the plug operate as a safety device as well. Hence, the plug according to the present invention has a dual purpose, that is, it can operate as a conventional plug, whether it be stationary or winding, as well as a safety device for the counterbalancing mechanism with which it cooperates, because of its projecting interlocking means.

A cable failure device for a cable-operated door operated by a tensioned cable, the cable-operated door having a movement guided along a fixed structure, such as a guide rail. The cable failure device is configured for cooperating with the tensioned cable so as to immobilize the cable-operated door with respect to the fixed structure in the event of a loss of tension in the cable. The cable failure device included a support bracket for mounting the cable failure device onto the door, a guiding assembly operatively mounted for guiding the movement of the door along the fixed structure, and a braking assembly operatively mounted onto the support bracket, and operable between a rest position where the guiding assembly is allowed to guide the door along the fixed structure, and an operable position triggered by a given loss of tension detected in the tension cable where the braking assembly engages a portion of the fixed structure for braking movement of the cable-operated door with respect to the fixed structure. The cable failure device also includes a safety arm operatively connected to the braking assembly and cooperating with the tensioned cable so as to detect the given loss of tension. The safety arm is operable between a safety configuration where it is positioned over at least one fastener of a corresponding hole of the support bracket when there is still a given tension in the tensioned cable, for preventing a user from removing the support bracket from the door, and a retracted configuration where the safety arm is positioned away from the fastener when the given tension is no longer present in the cable, thereby enabling the user access to the fastener. Thus, the cable failure device is configured for immobilizing the door in the event of a loss of tension and for preventing a user from removing the device from the door when there is still tension in the cable.

A cable failure device for a mobilizing a garage door in the event of a failure of one of the cables or one of the elements holding the cables is described. The cable failure device of the invention includes a support structure mounted on the cable operated door and includes a connection point onto which a tensioned cable is connected. A braking assembly is mounted onto the support structure and includes a casing mounted onto the support structure and a brake operable between a rest position and an operable position. The brake is movably mounted to the support structure and is located adjacent the outside of a fixed frame such as guide rails and is adapted to co-operate with a roller on the garage door so that a portion of the guide rail lies between the roller and the brake. A tension detector co-operating with the tension cable is provided for detecting a tension in the tension cable and an actuator is operatively connected to the tension detector and to the brake. When the brake is in the rest position, the rollers guide the door along the rail and when the brake is triggered into the operable position by a loss of tension in the cable detected by the tension detector, it causes the actuator to actuate the brake so that it engages the outside of these rails, thereby urging the brake and one of the rollers towards each other. This combined action brakes the movement of the cable operated door and thus impedes its free falling to the ground, thereby preventing damages and injuries.

A plug for use in a counterbalancing mechanism of a cable-operated door. The plug is used for operatively connecting an overhead shaft to a torsion spring co-axially mounted thereon. The plug includes a cylindrical collar and a cylindrical flange. The cylindrical collar has opposite first and second portions and is provided with a hooking slot for hooking a free end of the torsion spring thereon, and the torsion spring having a segment coaxially mounted about the first portion of the collar. The cylindrical flange is rigidly affixed to the second portion of the collar and is used for transferring a torque between the torsion spring and the overhead shaft when the flange is securely fixed about the overhead shaft. The plug is characterized in that the collar is eccentrically mounted about the overhead shaft, thereby allowing the plug to be used when the radial space between the plug and the overhead shaft is limited and also preventing the overhead shaft from being damaged by the free end of the torsion spring.
