An optical digital regenerator for digitally regenerating an input signal in an intact optical state. A first operating unit has a first probe light generator for generating a first probe light and a first optical operator for converting a waveform of the first probe light output from a first probe light generator according to an optical intensity waveform of the input signal light. A clock extractor extracts a clock component of the input signal light from a photocurrent generated by the first optical operator. A second optical operating unit has a second probe light generator for generating a second probe light pulsed in accordance with the clock output from the clock extractor and a second optical operator for sampling the second probe pulse light output from the second probe light generator.

The present invention regenerates optical signals in an intact optical state according to a low-speed optical clock. In one embodiment, an optical splitter applies a portion of optical pulse signals to a clock recovery circuit and the rest to an optical splitter. The optical splitter applies half of the input signal to an optical regenerator and the rest to another optical regenerator. The clock recovery circuit regenerates an electric clock signal with half the frequency of the input optical pulse and applies the clock to an optical clock pulse generator. The optical clock pulse generator generates an optical clock signal with half the frequency of the input optical pulse whose phase matches with that of the optical signal at the optical regenerator. An optical regenerator regenerates the optical signal from the optical splitter in an intact optical state. A polarization combiner combine the optical signals from the optical regenerators in mutually orthogonal polarization.

To improve the reliability of matrix switches of redundant configuration, a splitter (14) splits each of a plurality of input lights into two portions and applies them to corresponding input ports of matrix switches (10a and 10b). The working matrix switch (10a) connects between desired input and output ports and an optical shutter (30a) connecting to an output port (#1) is in a light transmission state. The matrix switch (10b) connects all its input ports (#1 through #8) to an output port (#1). An optical shutter (30b) connecting to an output port (#1) is in a light blocking state. A combiner (26) combines the lights which are output from the output ports (#1) of the matrix switches (10a and 10b) and transmitted through the optical shutters (30a and 30b) and also combines the output lights from the corresponding output ports (#2 through #8) of the matrix switches (10a and 10b).

A protection path reservation method which reserves protection paths to avoid a node failure for each transmission path on a network formed of a plurality of nodes, comprising assuming the nodes as an imaginary failure node in turn in a condition in which the node failure is not present in the network, and selecting N neighbor nodes connected to the imaginary failure node through N links, wherein the imaginary failure nodes sequentially transmit protection path reservation request messages to neighbor nodes, and the nodes which have received the protection path reservation request messages sequentially, one by one, reserve N−1 protection paths starting from the nodes.

An image pickup apparatus includes a system controller and a face detector, and can register face data of a photographer for a self-timer shooting mode in advance. In the self-timer shooting mode, the face detector extracts face data of people in a subject field from an image signal. When the system controller determines, on the basis of the extracted face data and the registered face data, that the photographer can be detected, the apparatus starts countdown for automatic shooting. Consequently, the apparatus can pick up an image of the photographer without fail, and the photographer can securely strike a pose within the countdown period of time. Furthermore, the apparatus can determine the countdown period of time optionally, thereby enabling the self-timer shooting to be executed depending on the personality of the photographer.

An internal combustion engine includes a connecting rod that connects a crankpin and a piston. The connecting rod has first and second connecting rods, and a guide piston is disposed at a connecting portion between the first and second connecting rods. Deformed portions are formed on a lower end portion of a guide piston and on a balancer weight portion of a crankshaft in order to reduce the whole length of the connecting rod, whereby a bottom dead center of the guide piston is set to a lower position. The engine has improved thermal efficiency by reducing the distance between the crank portion and the piston, increasing the speed of behavior of the piston at a position near a top dead center to reduce thermal energy loss, and preventing generation of knocking.

In the optical transmission line, a transmission fiber and a local area dispersion compensation fiber are disposed per repeater span defined by an optical amplification repeater, the local area dispersion compensation fiber is for compensating the average chromatic dispersion in the repeater span to become 2 ps/nm/km as well as a dispersion slope to become zero, and a wide area dispersion compensation fiber for compensating the average chromatic dispersion to become −0.2 ps/nm/km as well as the dispersion slope to become zero is disposed per predetermined number of optical repeater spans. The optical transmission fiber comprises a single mode optical fiber with large core diameter having a zero dispersion wavelength at a 1.3 &mgr;m band and plus chromatic dispersion at a signal wavelength band (a 1.55 &mgr;m band).
