A copying machine having the capability of reproducing an image at different magnifications from either a stored or calculated magnification ratio is provided. The size of the original and the size of the various copying papers available are calculated to determine an optimum magnification ratio. A preset value of optical magnification ratios can be provided within the copying machine. A controller can determined whether the calculated magnification ratio can be utilized within the preset predetermined range of values and corresponding control of the copier machine can be effected in accordance with that decision.

There is disclosed a control apparatus for copying machines or the like which have a function of autoresetting operating conditions for the machine to standard conditions upon lapse of a specified period time after the completion of operation of the machine or after a predetermined input procedure and is operable with a key device associated with the machine for permitting the operation of the machine, wherein the control apparatus effects the autoresetting function to immediately reset the operating conditions to the standard conditions when the machine has been brought out of the operation permitted state by the key device, irrespective of lapse of the specified period of time for the autoresetting. When the user withdraws the key device from the machine, the operating conditions change to the standard conditions, thereby efficiently preventing the objection that the machine will subsequently operate under the conditions undesired by the next user.

A copying apparatus comprises a document glass, an automatic document feeder that is free to be opened and closed with respect to the document glass, a paper feeding means, means for storing image formed papers and an image forming means. The image forming means is operable in a special paper-passing mode that permits the transfer paper to be ejected into the storing means without having the image formed thereon. The copying apparatus is provided with means for detecting the open and close actions of the automatic document feeder so that an alarm can be issued to remind the operator of the document left on the document glass according to the signal issued by the detecting means after the operation of the image forming means has been completed, and the operation of the alarm means can be inhibited after the operation of the image forming means in said paper-passing mode has been completed.

An automatic paper feeder presses the surface of copying paper loaded on a paper loading plate in a paper cassette against a paper feeding roller, and feeds the paper sheet by sheet in accordance with the rotation of the roller. When a paper detector provided at a downstream side of the roller does not detect the paper within a specified period of time after starting a paper feeding operation, the automatic paper feeder rotates the roller in the reverse direction, at the same time releasing the pressure between the paper and the roller, and then increases the pressure and rotates the roller in the forward direction to restart the paper feeding operation.
