Abstract: A communications system is described in which a base station controls interworking between a cell of the base station operating according to a first radio access technology and cells of access points operating according to a second radio access technology. The base station transmits control plane data to a mobile device in its cell, wherein the control plane data facilitates user plane communication by the mobile device, via a first access point. When the user plane communication has been handed over from the first access point to a second access point, the base station receives information identifying the second access point. Beneficially, the base station uses the received information for controlling the interworking and/or controlling a handover for the mobile device.

Abstract: A communication system comprises a plurality of cells, each cell being associated with a respective serving area of TUPF. A base station controls a communication session of a communication device via the base station and a TUPF. Mobility of the communication device between a source cell and a target cell is performed as follows: when the communication session uses a nomadic IP address and the target cell is associated with the same TUPF serving area as the source cell but the base station is unable to determine the TUPF serving area of the target cell, the base station initiates a redirection procedure rather than a handover procedure. When performing the redirection procedure, the communication connection for the communication session via the source cell is broken before the target cell has been prepared to receive communication for the communication session of the communication device.

Abstract: A communication system is disclosed in which a communication device communicates with communication apparatus that operates a cell within which the communication device is located. The cell is operated as a licensed assisted access (LAA) cell and has an associated physical uplink control channel (PUCCH). The communication device has a controller that is adapted to: generate a control signal for transmitting to said communication apparatus; perform a clear channel assessment (CCA) on said PUCCH before the control signal is transmitted; and block transmission of the control signal on said PUCCH when said CCA indicates that said channel is not clear. The communication device is further adapted, when said controller has not blocked said transmission of the control signal, to transmit the control signal to said communication apparatus in said PUCCH.

Abstract: A gateway is described which facilitates a change of communication cell for a mobile device in a communication system, which includes a core network. The gateway receives messages from a base station operating a cell and forwards the messages received from the base station to the core network. The gateway intercepts a message relating to a change of communication cell, from a source cell in which the mobile communication device is located to a target cell, to determine if the core network needs to be notified of the change of cell. When it is determined that the core network needs to be notified, the gateway generates a message for providing information relating to the change of cell to the core network and transmits the message to the core network.
