In this invention, a driving circuit for moving a head in the radial direction on the recording surface of a disk is coupled to a velocity detecting circuit for detecting the velocity at which the head moves. A velocity profile is provided for storing information on the target velocity of the head. A driving signal generating circuit is coupled to the velocity profile and the velocity detecting circuit for comparing a signal from the velocity detecting circuit with a signal from the velocity profile. The driving signal generating circuit outputs a driving signal to the driving circuit based on the result of the comparison. A controller is coupled to the driving circuit for measuring a time required for moving the head a predetermined distance at a predetermined reference value, and modifying the driving signal based on the result of the comparison. Scatter in feedback quantities or fluctuation in the driving signal during velocity control is thereby corrected.

An optical disk drive apparatus operable under track following mode and seek mode wherein, upon the detection of a track following operation error, a seek operation is initiated for seeking a new target track at a predetermined number of tracks distant from the current track. The seek operation is controlled to follow a velocity profile thus regaining control over an optical head that may have been jolted into an out of control velocity when the track following error occurred. The velocity profile provides for a reduced velocity as the target track is approached. The new target track is selected at a relatively large number of tracks distant from the current track if the head velocity is high and at a relatively small number of current tracks if the head velocity is low. If the current track is sensed to be an outer track, the new target track is selected toward the inner track and if the current track is sensed to be an inner track, the new target track is selected to be an outer track.

The present invention ensures successful focus acquisition in an optical disk drive independent of a travelling speed of an objective lens at the time when a focus servo circuit loop is closed. The present invention provides sending a signal to a focus actuator for bringing an objective lens close to an in-focus position while a focus servo circuit loop is opened; closing the loop by shutting off the signal sent to the focus actuator; adding an offset of a predetermined level to the focus error signal; detecting that the focus error signal to which the offset is added reaches a predetermined level; and closing the loop when it is detected that the predetermined level is reached, and gradually decreasing the value of the offset to be added to the focus error signal.

An apparatus and method of controlling an actuator of a data storage device detect and/or correct narrowband mechanical excitations such as due to spindle bearing defects through sensing and/or rejecting disturbance frequencies associated with such narrowband mechanical excitations in an actuator control signal generated by a data storage device controller. A narrowband filter may be used to reject, from an actuator control signal generated by a data storage device controller, a disturbance frequency associated with a spindle bearing defect in a data storage device, and disposed in proximity to a zero crossover frequency associated with the data storage device controller. In addition, a peak filter disposed in a control loop of a data storage device controller may be configured to detect a spindle bearing defect in a data storage device by detecting an amplitude of a control signal in the control loop in proximity to a disturbance frequency associated with the spindle bearing defect.

An active control mechanism and method for stabilizing a servo-controlled actuator system such as an actuator system in a data recording disk drive by compensating the vibrational modes of the actuator's arm assembly. The control mechanism has a sensing arrangement which can include one or more individual sensors attached to the actuator at locations where they generate signals in phase with the vibrational modes, and especially with all the low-frequency major vibrational modes, of the arm assembly. A control mechanism derives from the signals an adjustment signal consisting of three corrective terms—a stiffening correction, an active damping correction, and an inertia correction by a phase correction. Furthermore, high-frequency out-of-phase modes can be stabilized by appropriately shifting the phase of the signals. The adjustment signal is used in the feedback control loop to stabilize the actuator system.

A method and system for compensating head positioning servo in a storage device. In accordance with the method and apparatus of the present invention, an open-loop gain of a head positioning servo is calculated when the head positioning servo causes a head to follow a predetermined position of a target track of a storage media surface by generating a position detecting signal utilizing a position detecting signal gain. A compensated position detecting signal gain is generated by compensating the position detecting signal gain according to a difference between a first predetermined value and the open-loop gain of the head positioning servo, such that variability of the position detecting signal and the open-loop gain is reduced to achieve stability in a head positioning servo.

A system and method for providing rotation control stability within a disk drive. In accordance with the system of the present invention, a disk storage medium on which information is recorded is driven to rotate by a multiphase-phase DC servomotor. An actuator is utilized for loading and unloading the head to and from the disk storage medium. A load/unload controller commands the actuator to load or unload said head. In order to effectively compensate for an abrupt change in load on the servomotor caused by loading the head onto the disk storage medium, a slew rate switching unit is utilized to alter a slew rate of current supplied to the three-phase DC servomotor, based on a loading start command issued by the load/unload controller.

The present invention teaches the realization of a stable feedback control by selecting an optimal notch filter in an apparatus, such as a hard disk drive, that employs a positioning apparatus, such as an actuator, for positioning an object. The present invention further teaches the derivation of a frequency characteristic of a control loop excluding a notch filter by employing a method that does not damage a positioning apparatus. The present invention further teaches the method of adjusting a notch filter in accordance with a change of the resonant frequency of an actuator caused by the temperature fluctuations to prevent any deterioration of a feedback control performance.

A control arrangement having a feedforward system and a feedback system, a control model for generating reference position data from a feedforward control signal is separated into an original control model and a compensation filter. Gain of the feedforward control signal is compensated by a gain compensation circuit to form a feedforward control signal after compensation. The reference position data is input to a feedback controller, and a feedback control signal and feedforward control signal are input to a control object. Coefficients of the compensation filter and the gain compensation circuit are compensated on the basis of a head position trajectory obtained by actual seek operation.

A method and apparatus for use with a rotating storage device. The rotating storage device includes a storage medium driven to rotate, a head for reading and writing information on the storage medium and a ramped loading mechanism in which the head is stored. In accordance with the method of the present invention, the head is loaded from the ramped loading mechanism onto the storage medium. Next, location information stored in the storage medium via the head is read. A location of the head is then retained for a predetermined period above a track of a region other than a valid storage region of the storage medium after successfully reading the location information.
