A recording sheet, to be printed in a color thermal printer, includes a support and thermosensitive coloring layers of yellow, magenta and cyan formed thereon, the three coloring layers arranged from an obverse toward a reverse of the recording sheet. The recording sheet is rotated to pass under a thermal head. The rotation subjects the three coloring layers sequentially to thermal recording. With a sensor, 1st irradiance of a yellow fixing lamp is measured, as well as 2nd irradiance of a magenta fixing lamp. A target irradiance is determined from the 1st irradiance. A duty factor of a drive signal is redetermined from the 1st irradiance and the target irradiance, to actuate the yellow fixing lamp at the target irradiance. A 1st speed is previously adapted to the yellow coloring layer. The yellow fixing lamp is maintained at the target irradiance. The recording sheet is rotated at the 1st speed, for the recording to the yellow coloring layer. A 2nd speed is determined from the 1st irradiance. The recording sheet is rotated at the 2nd speed, for supplementary fixation of the yellow coloring layer with the yellow fixing lamp. A 3rd speed is previously adapted to the magenta coloring layer. The recording sheet is rotated at the 3rd speed with the 2nd irradiance maintained, for the recording to the magenta coloring layer. A 4th speed is determined from the 2nd irradiance. The recording sheet is rotated at the 4th speed, for supplementary fixation of the magenta coloring layer with the magenta fixing lamp.

A color direct thermal printer has a yellow fixing ultraviolet lamp and a magenta fixing ultraviolet lamp, in order to fix the coloring of color thermosensitive recording material. Behind the yellow and magenta fixing ultraviolet lamps is disposed a reflector, which has portions contacting the yellow and magenta fixing ultraviolet lamps for receiving heat from the yellow and magenta fixing ultraviolet lamps. Outside the reflector, a temperature sensor is mounted which measures tube temperature of the yellow and magenta fixing ultraviolet lamps through the reflector. When the measured temperature is greater than 40.degree. C., the fan is driven and sends air to the yellow and magenta fixing ultraviolet lamps. If the measured temperature is less than 30.degree. C. at the time of operating the starting key, a start of the printing operation is delayed. In the delay, the yellow and magenta fixing ultraviolet lamps are actuated and the tube temperature is raised.

A thermosensitive color recording sheet includes yellow, magenta and cyan thermosensitive coloring layers formed on a support. A thermal head heats there recording sheet for recording on the yellow coloring layer while the recording sheet is transported in a forward direction through the thermal head at a speed predetermined according to a thermal sensitivity of the yellow coloring layer. A yellow fixing lamp disposed behind the thermal head in the forward direction applies near ultraviolet rays to the recording sheet to fix the yellow coloring layer. The yellow fixing lamp is maintained at an irradiance set value while the recording sheet is transported in the forward direction. The irradiance set value is determined based on a maximum irradiance of the yellow fixing lamp that is measured prior to the thermal recording on the yellow coloring layer while driving the yellow fixing lamp by a drive pulse signal at a maximum duty factor. The recording sheet is then transported in a rearward direction under the yellow fixing lamp, to refix the yellow coloring layer. For the refixing, the yellow fixing lamp is maintained at a second irradiance set value determined based on a second maximum irradiance of the yellow fixing lamp that is measured at the end of the forward transport of the recording sheet, whereas the recording sheet is transported the rearward direction at a transport speed determined in accordance with the second irradiance set value.

A thermal head has a heating element array with a plurality of heating elements disposed in line and a head driver. The head driver drives the heating elements at the same time in accordance with each set of heating data of 8 bits to record dots of one line on a recording sheet. In printing dots by using heating data of 9 bits, a heating data divider circuit divides the 9-bit heating data into two series of 8-bit converted heating data. By using these two series of the 8-bit converted heating data, two heating sequences are continuously executed. Each heating element is heated by the two heating sequences as many times as that corresponding to the heating data.

An average temperature of the grazed glass layers is calculated from first and second temperatures detected by the first and second temperature sensors, the heat resistance of a path from the substrate to the first temperature sensor, and the heat resistance of an atmosphere in the housing. Based on the calculated temperature, electric energy to be supplied to the thermal head is changed to control heat energy generated from the thermal head.

The thermal head heats the recording sheet for recording on the magenta coloring layer. A magenta fixing lamp applies ultraviolet rays to the recording sheet to fix the magenta coloring layer optically. An irradiance sensor detects irradiance of the magenta fixing lamp during the magenta fixation. A refixing check circuit obtains a minimal irradiance of the detected irradiance, compares the minimal irradiance with a limit irradiance, and outputs a refixing command if the minimal irradiance is equal to or smaller than the limit irradiance. A driver turns on the magenta fixing lamp in response to the refixing command. A conveying speed determiner determines a speed of the conveyor rollers for the refixation according to the minimal irradiance. The conveyor rollers are operated at the determined speed while the magenta fixing lamp is turned on. The magenta fixing lamp refixes the recording sheet optically. Finally the thermal head heats the recording sheet for recording on the cyan coloring layer.

A standard resistor having a known resistance value is connected to one transistor in a drive IC. The drive IC has a plurality of transistors each controlling the on/off of a heating element. The saturation voltage of each transistor is generally the same. One of a plurality of transistors is turned on, and a discharge time required for a capacitor to discharge via a standard resistor or via each heating element and lower its voltage to a predetermined voltage is measured. The resistance value of each heating element is determined from a ratio of a discharge time via each heating element to a discharge time via the standard resistor and the resistance value of the standard resistor. A difference between the standard resistance value and a resistance value of each heating element generates a bias heat energy error during bias heating and an image heat energy error during image heating. In accordance with these heat energy errors, bias data for generating a heat energy immediately before coloring is corrected. Each heating element is driven by using the corrected bias data, and the heat energy errors are corrected at the time of bias heading. At the time of image heating, each heating element is driven by using image data without considering the resistance value error.

A thermal printing method for printing an image line by line on a recording material by driving an array of heating elements of a thermal head while transporting the recording material relative to the thermal head. Heating data for recording a subject line to print is corrected in accordance with heat accumulation amounts of the heating elements. Surface temperatures of the respective heating elements are estimated on the basis of corrected heating data. A frictional force that will be generated between the thermal head and the recording sheet on recording the subject line is calculated on the basis of the estimated surface temperatures. The heating elements start being driven to record the subject line at a time shifted by a time shifting amount from a standard time. The time shifting amount is determined depending upon the frictional force so as to eliminate influence of fluctuations in transport speed of the recording sheet on the printed image.
