摘要: A device for monitoring lubricant within a disk drive includes a reservoir packet impregnated with lubricant. The reservoir packet is disposed between a first metal screen and a second metal screen such that a lubricant reservoir transducer is created. The capacitance of the lubricant reservoir packet is monitored and when it falls below a predetermined percentage of the initial capacitance, a user is warned to back up the files contained in the disk drive before failure due to lack of lubricant occurs.

摘要: A data storage system is described with a system for controlling the amount of lubricant being dispensed from the reservoir using a feedback loop that includes at least one sensor output for a physical parameter inside device such as temperature, humidity and fly-height. In one embodiment the lubricant reservoir housing is equipped with a movable shutter over an aperture in the lubricant reservoir housing. The area of the aperture through which the lubricant vapor can pass is controlled by moving the shutter. In another embodiment the lubricant reservoir housing is supplied with a lubricant diffusion packet such as an effusion cell or diffusion tube containing liquid lubricant. An energy source for the lubricant diffusion packet allows the temperature of the lubricant and, therefore, its vapor pressure, to be increased when the need for additional lubricant is sensed. In a preferred embodiment the output from a Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) with an overcoat similar to that used on a disk is used to measure the degree of lubricant saturation inside the drive by sensing the change in the frequency of a crystal oscillator due to the lubricant adsorbing on a surface of the QCM.

摘要: Approaches for reducing vibrations, such as resonance vibrations, that are propagated to a hard-disk drive (HDD) head are disclosed. A hard-disk drive may compromise a lead suspension that includes a magnetic read/write head. The magnetic read/write head may be connected to the lead suspension by a plurality of leads. A portion of each of the plurality of leads, such as the solder ball joints, may be covered by a dampening material that is designed to absorb vibrations occurring in the lead suspension to prevent transmission of the vibrations to the magnetic read/write head. Alternately, the dampening material may be applied to other locations, such as the limiter engagements, which can transmit vibrations to the magnetic read/write head.

摘要: A system in one embodiment includes a disk; a reservoir having a selectively openable cover; a lubricant in the reservoir; and a sensor for detecting an event or condition that triggers opening of the cover. A method in another embodiment includes determining that a trigger event or a trigger condition is occurring or has occurred in a hard disk drive; opening a cover of a lubricant reservoir for allowing egress of lubricant therefrom upon determining that the trigger event or the trigger condition has occurred; and closing the cover of the lubricant reservoir after a period of time. Additional systems and methods are also presented.

摘要: A method and apparatus for determining the likelihood that a hard-disk drive (HDD) will experience an imminent error in operation is provided. The HDD comprises a differential pressure sensor capable of measuring the difference in the pressure between the interior and the exterior of the enclosure. The differential pressure sensor may reside in a breather filter covering an air passage within the enclosure. The HDD also comprises a risk assessment component capable of (a) determining an expression of how likely it is that the HDD will experience an imminent error in operation based, at least in part, upon the difference in pressure measured by the pressure sensor, and (b) communicating the expression to a user of the HDD. The HDD may optionally comprise one or more of an atmospheric pressure sensor, a particle counter, and a chemical vapor sensor which may be used by the risk assessment component.

摘要: Approaches for determining the likelihood that a hard-disk drive (HDD) will experience an imminent error in operation, and preventing the same, using an atmospheric pressure sensor are provided. The HDD comprises an atmospheric pressure sensor capable of determining the altitude at which the HDD is currently located. The HDD also comprises a risk assessment component capable of (a) determining an expression of how likely it is that the HDD will experience an imminent error in operation based, at least in part, upon the current altitude of the HDD, and (b) communicating the expression to a user of the HDD. The HDD may optionally comprise one or more of a particle counter, differential pressure sensor, and a chemical vapor sensor for use by the risk assessment component. If the HDD is above a particular altitude, the Thermal Fly-Height control settings of the heads may be adjusted to reduce risk of error.
