An offset perfecting press is disclosed which has a pair of blanket cylinders on opposite sides of a web traveling along a predefined path. Bearing different images to be printed, two plate cylinders are disposed in circumferentially spaced apart positions on each blanket cylinder. Each plate cylinder is independently movable between an image transfer position, where the plate cylinder is held to the blanket cylinder in order to print an image thereon for subsequent transfer to the web, and an image nontransfer position where the plate cylinder is spaced from the blanket cylinder. Only one plate cylinder is held in the image transfer position on each side of the web. For a change from one image to another, the plate cylinders that have been printing the opposite sides of the web are retracted to the image nontransfer positions, and the other plate cylinders, rotating in phase with the blanket cylinders, are moved to the image transfer positions. There is no need for stopping the web or the blanket cylinders. An electronic control system is provided for automatic image conversion. A multiple-unit, multiple-tower, multiple-web rotary press is also disclosed which comprises a multiplicity of printing units, including one or more constructed as in the foregoing, which are arranged in multiple towers for concurrently printing multiple webs under automatic control.

An apparatus for changing operational plate cylinders during rotary press operation is provided. This apparatus is possible to substantially equalize an actual print count to a set print count before change of operational plate cylinders. This can eliminate waste to print undesired recording paper (paper loss) and lead to cost down. A rotary press includes at least two or more plate cylinders (P), drive means (13, 13′) for driving the plate cylinders (P) and switching means (15) for selectively switching the plate cylinders (P) in a printable state and in an unprintable state. In the apparatus (1) for changing operational plate cylinders during rotary press operation, input console means (2) is at least available for designating (x) an earlier operational plate cylinder (FP) that is switched from the printable state to the unprintable state by the switching means (15) and a later operational plate cylinder (RP) that is switched from the unprintable state to the printable state by the switching means (15) among the two or more plate cylinders (P), and setting (y) a print count before change of operational plate cylinders.

The spray type dampening water supply device includes actuation signal output means for outputting an actuation signal corresponding to rotating operation of a rotary portion associated with operation of the printing press, counting means for counting a signal output from the actuation signal output means and outputting a signal at every predetermined number of count, nozzle operation control means set a plurality of control modes determined for differentiating supply amount of the dampening water from initiation of printing to a predetermined operating condition, for controlling operation of the nozzle means, control mode designating means for selectively designating the control mode of the nozzle operation control means at every occurrence of temporary stop and initiation of printing of operation of the printing press corresponding to an accumulated count value on the basis of the signal output from the counting means.
