    Abstract: An elevator mechanism and method for raising and lowering radioactive samples through a shielded vertical counting chamber in a benchtop scintillation detector which has a practical limit on its height. The elevator mechanism adds little or nothing to the height of the detector by using an elongated flexible member such as a metal tape secured to the bottom of the elevator platform and extending downwardly through the counting chamber and its bottom shielding, where the tape is bent laterally for connection to a drive means. In the particular embodiment illustrated, the tape is bent laterally below the bottom shielding for the counting chamber, and then upwardly along or through one side of the shielding to a reel at the top of the shielding. The tape is wound onto the reel, and the reel is driven by a reversible motor which winds and unwinds the tape on the reel to raise and lower the elevator platform.

    Abstract: An automatic changing apparatus for sample vials and like regularized objects is provided, wherein a rectilinear array of vials is indexed along an X-axis, rows of the array are indexed seriatim along a Z-axis, and individual vials of the Z-axis indexed rows are indexed seriatim past a counting station along a Y-axis. Photoelectric sensors are provided to override portions of the indexing mechanism if no sample vials are present in array rows or individual compartments.

    Abstract: Flexible sample containers for liquid scintillation spectrometry analysis of test samples containing one or more radioactive isotopes disposed in a liquid scintillator wherein the flexible sample containers either in individual or strip form are made of layered, flexible, light-transmissive, polyester film and are provided further with means for avoiding light ''''piping'''' or optical isolation from respective adjacent sample containers. Apparatus for handling such flexible sample containers is provided with light transmission sealing means for preventing entry of ambient light or escape of light from the photomultiplier tube detection devices. Also disclosed are methods and apparatus for filling, forming, sealing and handling the aforementioned flexible sample containers that readily lends itself to fully automated production line type operations.

    Abstract: An elevator mechanism and method for raising and lowering radioactive samples through a vertical well which has a practical limit on its height. The elevator mechanism adds little or nothing to the height of the well by using an elongated flexible metal member such as tape secured to the bottom of the elevator platform and extending downwardly through the well, where the tape is bent laterally for connection to a drive means.
