Abstract: Integrating a biomass pyrolysis and upgrading process into a fluid catalytic cracking unit. The process uses conventional FCC feed and a mixture of a solvent and biomass to produce upgraded fuel products. A slurry stream composed of solid biomass particles and a solvent is fed into an FCC riser through a slurry pump to achieve biomass pyrolysis and in situ pyrolysis oil upgrading. The catalytic cracking of the conventional petroleum feed also occurs in the riser.

Abstract: Carbohydrates as derived from plant biomass can be converted into mono-alcohols, diols, and/or bi-functional alcohols or into carboxylic acid derivatives. By catalytic transesterification of such carbohydrate derivatives, ester-type diesel-fuel blendstock components may be produced. More specifically, alkyl levulinates are catalytically trans-esterified with hydroxyl-functionalized compounds where both the alcohols and the alkyl levulinates are derived from biomass carbohydrates. Esters produced in this way show physicochemical characteristics that make them suitable for use as diesel fuel blendstock.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates generally to methods and systems for achieving enhanced catalytic performance via the strategic arrangement of multiple catalyst beds in series, where each catalyst bed comprises a compositionally-distinct catalyst, and each catalyst facilitates the conversion of the same structural moieties on the reactant to form the same product. Arranging multiple catalyst beds according to the methods and systems disclosed herein allows a predictable enhancement of conversion of the reactant to product without the need for time-consuming experimentation to test all possible catalysts configurations.
