Abstract: The present invention is intended to control the color temperature of white exhibited by a liquid crystal display device. White is produced when light waves emitted through pixels associated with three colors of red, green, and blue have maximum intensities. The amounts of light emitted through the respective pixels are controlled by differentiating the shapes of the pixel electrodes disposed at the respective pixels from one another. Thus, the color temperature of white is controlled. Otherwise, the shapes of interceptive films disposed at the respective pixels are differentiated from one another in order to control light waves emitted through the respective pixels. Thus, the color temperature of white is controlled. The interceptive film may be shaped like the pixel electrode. Otherwise, the interceptive film may be realized with an interceptive pattern other than that of the pixel electrode or one of openings bored in a black matrix.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display device comprises: a first display panel displaying a color image; a second display panel displaying a monochrome image; and an image processor generating first image data corresponding to the color image and second image data corresponding to the monochrome image based on an input video signal. The image processor generates the first image data and the second image data such that a graph representing transmittance of the first display panel for input gradation corresponding to the input video signal and a graph representing transmittance of the second display panel for the input gradation corresponding to the input video signal intersect each other at predetermined input gradation.

The image signal generating unit comprises a memory which stores display-position information indicating a display location of a first image displayed in the primary display area. The display data comprises first and second display data to be displayed in the first display area and the second display area, respectively. The first display data is generated based on the externally input single image data and the display-position information. The control unit is configured to cause a first image to be displayed in the first display area based on the first display data.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display device includes: a first display panel displaying a color image, a second display panel that is disposed farther away from the observer with respect to the first display panel and displays a monochrome image, and an image processor that generates color image data and monochrome image data. The image processor includes an extension filtering unit that performs extension filtering on first monochrome image data, which is made monochrome using a maximum value in a value of each color expressing color information included in the input video signal. The extension filtering unit performs the extension filtering on the first monochrome image data using a large filter size in a larger luminance difference region, and performs the extension filtering on the first monochrome image data using a small filter size in a small luminance difference region.
