摘要: A LIDAR includes multiple light sources and a Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCOS) device for controllably redirecting beams from each of the multiple light sources. The same or a different LCOS device can be used to controllably redirect reflected light to each of several corresponding light detectors. The LCOS device can be adjusted on a slower time scale while the light sources can be sequentially activated on a faster time scale. The LCOS device provides for fine steering control of LIDAR beams. The use of multiple light sources and detectors allows for a higher LIDAR scan rate.

摘要: An optical performance monitor comprises a first stage configured to receive a multiplexed optical signal. The first stage is tunable over a period. The first stage periodically filters the multiplexed optical signal over an optical channel to produce a fine filtered optical signal. A second stage is coupled to the first stage and has a second-stage transfer function. The second stage receives the fine filtered optical signal and produces one or a plurality of interfered optical signal pairs. A third stage is coupled to the second stage and has a third-stage transfer function. The third stage receives the optical signal pairs and demultiplexes the optical signal pairs to produce a plurality of demultiplexed optical signals. The combination of the second-stage transfer function and the third-stage transfer function is flatter over the optical channel than the third-stage transfer function.

摘要: A monitoring and calibration apparatus for an optical networking device such as ROADM is provided. Reflectors are integrated into the device, for example at the ends of optical interconnect cables. The reflectors reflect light in specific monitoring wavelengths and pass other wavelengths such as those used for communication. A light source emits monitoring light which is reflected by the reflector and measured by a detector to measure the integrity of optical paths. The optical paths can include optical cables and cable connectors. Path integrity between different modules of the device can therefore be monitored. Multiple reflectors, reflecting light in different wavelengths, can be placed in series along the same optical path and used to monitor multiple segments of the path. A wavelength selective switch (WSS) of the device can be used to route monitoring light to different optical paths. The WSS also operates to route communication signals in the device.

摘要: A method for conveying information through an optical fiber link between a transmitter and a receiver of an optical communication system. The method includes generating, by the transmitter, a predetermined spectral change, and inserting the predetermined spectral change into an optical fiber link for transmission to the receiver. A detector associated with the receiver detects the predetermined spectral change in an optical signal received through the optical fiber link, and generates a detection signal in accordance with the detection result. The detector is independent of a digital signal processor of the receiver that is configured to recover data modulated on the optical signal received through the optical fiber link.

摘要: A system and method are presented for coupling OAM optical beams to optical fibers. The system may include, for instance, an OAM beam generator, for receiving one or more of a plurality of input signals, and generating a different OAM mode signal for each input signal. The OAM beam generator may further be operative to adjust a location and/or an exit angle of the one or more OAM mode signals before sending the one or more OAM mode signals to a beam combiner that combines the one or more OAM mode signals into a combined mode OAM transmission. The system may further include a controller in communication with at least one crosstalk estimate sensor and the at least one OAM beam generator, the controller operative to optimize the crosstalk estimate by receiving the crosstalk estimate for one of the OAM mode signals, and sending control instructions instructing the OAM beam generator to adjust a location and/or an exit angle of the one or more OAM mode signals to reduce the crosstalk estimate.

摘要: A state of polarization (SOP) controller allows a randomly polarized input beam to be converted to a single linear polarization, while transferring substantially all of the power to the output. The input beam is split into orthogonal components and one of the components rotated and a phase difference between the components compensated for. The phase aligned components may then be recombined into a single output. The phase shifters may be reset during a reset period during which the impact on data transmission is reduced.

摘要: A method and apparatus for controlling an optical switch. The switch includes a switching fabric and optical amplifiers for amplifying optical signals. A configuration for the switching fabric is generated and implemented. The configuration indicates a set of optical paths between switching fabric input ports and the output ports. Optical path losses through the switching fabric vary based on the configuration. An amplifier control signal for controlling gains of the optical amplifiers, is also provided. The configuration for the switching fabric is generated based on the gains of the optical amplifiers, the amplifier control signal is generated based on the configuration for the switching fabric, or both.

摘要: A photonic device such as a polarization controller includes a coupler, such as a 2×2 MMI coupler, or a series of such couplers. Couplers may be interspersed with other components such as phase shifters. Photodetectors such as photodiodes are coupled to input and output lines of the coupler or couplers, for example via taps. In various embodiments, all of the couplers include photodetectors monitoring light power for at least two of their inputs and outputs, and at least one of the couplers includes photodetectors monitoring at least three of its inputs and outputs. The arrangement of photodetectors can provide sufficient information for feedback control of the photonic device and/or determining the state of polarization of light within the photonic device. Signals from some photodetectors can be used to estimate light power at locations in the photonic device lacking photodetectors.
