摘要： In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, a customer premises equipment (CPE) includes a memory unit, a communications unit, and a processing unit. The memory unit stores and retrieves a plurality of network addresses, including a default server network address corresponding to a default server. The communications unit can send messages to and receive messages from a plurality of servers over a communications network. Each server is specified by a unique network address. The processing unit determines if a configuration server network address is present within the memory unit. If the configuration server network address is not present within the CPE the processing unit retrieves the default server network address from the memory unit and sends a configuration server network address request message through the communications unit to the default server requesting the configuration server network address.

The network status detector unit is configured to detect the availability of the first network and output a first network status signal indicating the availability or unavailability of the first network. The network disabling unit is configured to receive the first network status signal and disable the sending and receiving of messages on the second network when the first network status signal indicates the first network is unavailable.

The first communications unit sends and receives message packets over a wide area network (WAN), and the processing unit controls the sending and receiving of message packets through the first communications unit. The sending and receiving of message packets comprises network traffic, while each packet has a packet size corresponding to an amount of WAN network utilization for each packet. The processing unit is adapted to measure, report, and limit the amount of WAN network utilization.

The switch also includes a passive cooling system be devoid of fans and that is operable to cool the Ethernet switch. A temperature sensor is operable to measure a temperature of the Ethernet switch is included as is an alarm software responsive to the temperature sensor and operable to initiate an alarm when a measured temperature of the Ethernet switch exceeds a particular limit.

摘要： A method and system for remotely managing a bridge device, such as a modem, are disclosed. Management traffic from a service provider can be communicated to a bridge device which lacks a public IP address by sending the management traffic through the bridge device to a router of a LAN. The router then sends the management traffic back to the bridge device. Thus, the service provider can perform management tasks such as troubleshooting, health monitoring, accounting, provisioning, security and firmware upgrades in a manner that is transparent to the user.
