Abstract: Mobile devices often use orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to calculate position information of mobile devices within the network. However, physical distance between the mobile device and a signal source for positioning and other environmental factors can influence the signal strength of received signals. Received signals at the mobile device that are stronger may drown out the weaker signals, particularly when two signal sources occupy the same symbol. In traditional OFDM, a signal source transmits the same symbol for each positioning occasion, so a weaker signal may never be detected over a stronger signal, reducing the accuracy of the positioning calculations. Described herein are systems and methods for using a pattern to vary the designated symbol for each signal source in a wireless network so that a weaker signal from a signal source may be detected on at least some of the positioning occasions.

Abstract: Methods, systems, computer-readable media, and apparatuses for determination of multipath for determining a location of user equipment (UE) are presented. In some embodiments, the UE may, based on a first indication of signal strength associated with a first polarization type, and a second indication of signal strength associated with a second polarization type, determine an indication of multipath reflection along a path of signal propagation between a space vehicle (e.g., GNSS satellite) and the UE. Circularly polarized positioning signals may be received by the UE via natively present linearly polarized antennas and converted into circularly polarized signals. Converted circularly polarized signals may include right-handed and left-handed components, and signal strengths for each component may be compared to determine the presence of multipath. Positioning signals may be given a weight or disregarded based on the multipath determination when determining the position of the UE.

Abstract: Methods, systems, computer-readable media, and apparatuses for determining a UE position within a coverage sub-area of a cell based on cell identity data are presented. In some embodiments, the UE detects one more cell identities, including a cell identity of a serving cell and possibly a cell identity of a neighbor cell of the serving cell. The one or more cell identities are included in cell identity data. The cell identity data is used in a look up of a data structure that associates coverage sub-areas of a coverage area of the serving cell with most likely positions within the coverage sub-areas and with cell identities. The result of the look up indicates that the UE is positioned at a most likely position within a coverage sub-area of the serving cell.

Abstract: Disclosed are techniques for determining round-trip times (RTTs) between a user equipment (UE) and multiple base stations. In an aspect, the UE transmits an RTT measurement signal whose arrival time is measured by each of the base stations, and each of the base stations returns an RTT response signal whose arrival times are measured by the UE. In another aspect, the base stations each transmit an RTT measurement signal and the UE returns an RTT response signal. The receiver of the RTT measurement signal may include the measured arrival time in a payload of the RTT Response signal. Alternatively, the measured arrival time(s) of the RTT Measurement signal(s) and the transmission time(s) of the RTT Response signal(s) are sent in a separate message. The RTT signals can be wideband signals using low reuse resources.

Abstract: A reference signal may provide for enhanced bandwidth utilization to enable highly accurate position determination with relatively low bandwidth. For a given allocated bandwidth, a reference signal may use of only a portion of the allocated bandwidth by using plurality of sub-bands. In some cases, the sub-bands may be near the edges of the allocated band to maximize Gabor bandwidth.

Abstract: Many mobile devices and mobile networks utilize orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to calculate position information of mobile devices within the network. However, the Doppler Effect and other noise or obstructions can cause OFDM signals to become entangled, particularly when the mobile device is moving, making the calculated position information inaccurate. Described herein are systems and methods for disentangling the OFDM signals by calculating a symbol length for the signals that is longer than the minimum symbol length, which is used in traditional OFDM. Selecting a longer symbol length reduces the Doppler Effect and other noise on the signals, making positioning calculations more accurate.
