    Abstract: Disclosed herein is a converter for converting an AC voltage to a DC voltage, the converter comprising: a first H-bridge circuit comprising a first AC terminal for receiving an AC voltage, a second AC terminal, a first DC terminal and a second DC terminal; a second H-bridge circuit comprising a first AC terminal for receiving an AC voltage, a second AC terminal, a first DC terminal and a second DC terminal; an isolation block arranged between the second AC terminal of the first H-bridge circuit and the second AC terminal of the second H-bridge circuit; and a DC voltage output of the converter with a first terminal and a second terminal; wherein: the first terminal of the DC voltage output is connected to the first DC terminal of the first H-bridge circuit and the first DC terminal of the second H-bridge circuit; and the second terminal of the DC voltage output is connected to the second DC terminal of the first H-bridge circuit and the second DC terminal of the second H-bridge circuit.

    Abstract: A propulsor (101) for an aircraft is shown. The propulsor comprises a propulsive fan (106), and an electric machine (108) configured to drive the propulsive fan. The electric machine has a casing containing electrical and electromechanical components, a shaft which extends outside of the casing and which is connected to the propulsive fan, and a seal to seal the casing around the shaft. A pressurisation system pressurises the casing above an external pressure to prevent electrical breakdown within gas in the casing of the electric machine.

    Abstract: Reconfigurable permanent magnet electrical machines and aircraft power and propulsion systems comprising such electrical machines are described. In one aspect, an aircraft power and propulsion system comprises: a gas turbine engine; a permanent magnet electrical machine comprising a rotor drivingly coupled to a spool of the gas turbine engine, and a stator comprising windings controllably switchable between a star configuration and a delta configuration; a DC electrical network; an AC:DC power electronics converter, an AC side of which is connected to terminals of the stator windings of the electrical machine and a DC side of which is connected to the DC electrical network; and a control system. The control system is configured to monitor at least one operating condition of the power and propulsion system and to control the switching of the stator windings between the star configuration and the delta configuration based on the at least one operating condition.

    Abstract: A method of controlling a permanent magnet synchronous electric machine (PMSM) drive using a Deadbeat Predictive Current Control (DBPCC) scheme is provided. The method comprises: determining d-axis and q-axis stator current values (id, iq) representative of a measured PMSM current; determining d-axis and q-axis reference current values (id*, iq*); based on the stator current values (id, iq) and the reference current values (id*, iq*), determining d-axis and q-axis current correction values (Cd, Cq); determining corrected reference current values (id**, iq**) as a sum of the reference current values (id*, iq*) and the current correction values (Cd, Cq); and controlling the PMSM drive using the corrected reference current values (id**, iq**) as reference current inputs of the DBPCC scheme. A controller for performing the method; a system comprising the controller, a PMSM and associated power electronics; and a computer program for performing the method are also provided.

    Abstract: A permanent magnet electrical machine has a rotor supporting a circumferential row of permanent magnets and a stator coaxial with the rotor and having a circumferential row of teeth carrying respective coil windings. The teeth provide paths for magnetic flux from the magnets, thereby electromagnetically linking the magnets and coils when the rotor rotates. The teeth have respective core portions on which the coil windings are mounted, and respective tip portions located between the core portions and the rotor. The tip portions are controllably rotatable between a first position where the tip portion and the core portion are angularly aligned to enhance magnetic flux linkage between the magnets and the coils, and a second position in which the tip portion is rotated out of angular alignment with its core portion to reduce magnetic flux linkage between the magnets and the coils. The tip portions are biased to the second position.

Each blade further comprises a rotor element at the tip comprising a permanent magnet having a first pole (401) and a second pole (402), the first pole being located adjacent the suction side of the blade and the second pole being located adjacent the pressure side such that a magnetic flux path extends perpendicularly through the blade tip.

    Abstract: An electrical machine has a variable reluctance rotor, and a stator formed as an annular array of stator segments. The reluctance of the rotor-to-stator magnetic flux path varies with rotor position whereby the stator segments are magnetically energizable to rotate the rotor. The stator segments are arranged in the array such that, when energized to rotate the rotor, they produce an unbalanced force on the rotor. The machine further has a compensator including one or more balancing segments which are configured to be magnetically energizable to produce a balancing force on the rotor which balances the unbalanced force. The reluctance of the rotor-to-compensator magnetic flux path is substantially invariant with rotor position.

    Abstract: A variable speed generator for producing AC electrical power includes an alternator powerable by rotational action to generate a first AC current, and a first rectifier which rectifies the first AC current from the alternator. The generator further includes a main exciter having a first field winding which receives the rectified first AC current, and having a first armature which produces in response a second AC current. The generator further includes a second rectifier which rectifies the second AC current from the first armature. The generator further includes a main generator having a second field winding which receives the rectified second AC current, and having a second armature which produces in response an output AC current. The second field winding is configured to provide a plurality of selectively activatable pole configurations which differ in the number of their poles, such that the frequency of the output AC current can be varied by switching between the pole configurations. The variable speed generator further includes a control arrangement for activating the selected pole configuration.
