Interference information can be generated by a base station by evaluating uplink conditions, and disparate interference information can be collected from neighbor base station(s). Interference information associated with the base station and the neighbor base station(s) can be transmitted by the base station to access terminal(s). An access terminal that receives that interference information associated with the base station and the neighbor base station(s) can control an operation based at least in part upon the interference information. For example, the access terminal can adjust a transmit power, select a target serving base station for handover, and/or choose a random access channel (RACH) resource to use for random access as a function of the interference information associated with the base station and the neighbor base station(s).

Apparatus and methods are provided for enabling communication on an enhanced access channel (EACH) without necessitating the additional features or channels usually implemented along with this capability. To this end, control information corresponding to the EACH transmission may be provided to an access terminal on a paging channel (PCH). For example, a base station may broadcast a general access parameters message (GAPM) to enable the access terminal to configure EACH transmissions. An access terminal (AT) and a data-optimized cellular communication radio network (RN) negotiate a set of packet sizes for use on a reverse link between the AT and the RN. The negotiated set of packet sizes may differ from the default set of packet sizes defined in an existing standard, such as 1xEV-DO Revisions A and B. The packet sizes in the negotiated set may be tailored to provide a good fit with an application transmitting data on the reverse link, such as a voice encoder of a voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) application. The AT and the RN communicate using the negotiated set of packet sizes. The packet sizes of the negotiated set may be mapped to the same reverse rate indicator (RRI) channel codewords as are defined in systems operating under the standard. Packing efficiency is thus increased, and higher capacity for delay-sensitive applications is achieved.

Methods and apparatus for selecting a serving sector in a high rate data (HDR) communication system are disclosed. An exemplary HDR communication system defines a set of data rates, at which a sector of an Access Point may send data packets to an Access Terminal. The sector is selected by the Access Terminal to achieve the highest data throughput while maintaining a targeted packet error rate. The Access Terminal employs various methods to evaluate quality metrics of forward and reverse links from and to different sectors, and uses the quality metrics to select the sector to send data packets to the Access Terminal.
