A fibrous product containing (a) a papermaking grade of pulp, (b) a structured particle latex having pH independent cationic groups bound at or near the particle surface and (c) a co-additive. The pulp is represented by unbleached softwood kraft. The latex is represented by a structured-particle latex having (a) a core of a copolymer of styrene and butadiene (b) an encapsulating layer of styrene, butadiene and vinylbenzyl chloride which is reacted with 2-(dimethylamino) ethanol to form quaternary ammonium groups. The co-additive is represented by a hydrolyzed polyacrylamide having a degree of polymerization of 5500. To an aqueous slurry of the pulp are added the latex and an aqueous solution of the co-additive, the resulting suspension is dewatered and dried by heating.

Stable emulsions of water-insoluble organic pesticides are formed by mixing the pesticide with an aqueous dispersion of a graft copolymer comprising a reactive polymeric surfactant base polymer and a nonionic hydrophobic grafted composition. The graft copolymer spontaneously absorbs organic pesticides with low water solubility upon simple mixing. The resulting product is much more stable to coalescence than emulsions made with conventional or polymeric surfactants.Emulsifiable organic based concentrates, having a continuous oil phase, which are formed from admixtures of pesticidally active water-insoluble organic pesticides with graft copolymers can be diluted with or in water, thus, inverting the continuous oil phase to stable water based oil-in-water emulsions of the active pesticide.

The present invention further provides a substantially non-aqueous agricultural pesticide concentrate formulation of a non-ionic surfactant and a amphipathic graft copolymer composition in admixture with a water-insoluble organic agricultural pesticide which concentrate formulation can be easily diluted with water to form non-settling, freeze-thaw stable formulations. The present invention further provides methods for the use of water-diluted agricultural pesticide concentrate formulations of the above non-ionic surfactant concentrate formulations in the kill and control of agricultural pest.

A novel composite membrane and methods of making the membrane are described. The discriminating layer of the membrane is prepared by reaction of a reactive cationic compound group with a compound bearing a nucleophilic moiety. At least one of the reactants bears an average of two or more reactive groups. The reaction product contains covalent bonds formed via charge eliminating reactions.In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the nucleophilic group is anionic and a coacervate is formed initially on a microporous substrate. The resulting membrane may be useful for reverse osmosis, gas or ultrafiltration separations.

Structured particle latexes are prepared by emulsion polymerizing monomeric materials in aqueous media in one or more stages wherein in at least one of the stages a reactive polymeric surfactant is used. The resulting latex contains nonionic particles to which are bound the reactive polymeric surfactant which forms a layer containing stabilizing "ionic" groups such as sulfonium groups, quaternary ammonium groups or sulfonate groups chemically bound at or near the surface of the polymer particles, which are dispersed in aqueous media. The cationic latexes are particularly suitable for beater additives and organic pigments.

A process for preparing substantially linear water-soluble interpolymeric interfacially spreading polyelectrolytes, such process comprising (1) a homogeneous polymerization in an aqueous emulsion of a mixture of ethylenically unsaturated nonionic monomers wherein at least one of such monomers contains a reactive group and wherein the polymerization reaction forms an interpolymer containing nonionic functional groups, then (2) adding a coreactant compound to the aqueous emulsion in an amount sufficient to convert the interpolymer to a water-soluble polyelectrolyte having a charge which is the same as the charge of the emulsion of (1) above.
