A solid state touch or control button assembly (10), with no moving button parts and operated by capacitive sensing by monitoring the phase shift of a signal applied to the face of the button, including in a first embodiment (FIGS. 2A & 2B) a auto balancing button and in a second embodiment (FIGS. 3A & 3B) a constant pressure button. If skin or other material comes into contact with the touch surface, the capacitance is changed and sensed, causing the electrical or electronic function controlled by the touch button to be activated (or deactivated, depending on the design, or otherwise altered). LEDs then are activated, providing visual feedback to the button pusher through a light ring (2A) surrounding the button surface (1). False activation of the button by residual impedance and external influences, such as temperature change, cleaner residue build-up and other deposits, are avoided by compensating for them by slowly auto balancing to all such phase shifts, with the rate of auto balance being set to be faster than the rate of change of the steady state phase shift; and, additionally, false activations by noise transients, including those due to EMI, FRI and other environmental fluctuations, are avoided by delaying the activation of the button by an appropriate amount of time, such as, for example, of the order of about one hundred (100 msec.) milliseconds.

An electronic stepper for indicating floor position has initialization switches set by a serviceman for indicating a reference floor position. Whenever the car goes by the reference position in the hoistway, the corresponding reference floor is output. The electronic stepper may be mounted on a printed circuit board having a floor display for use by the serviceman. Various toggle switches may be provided for use by the serviceman in setting up and checking operation. Power checking means may be provided for initiating nonvolatile storage of the current floor position in the event of a brown-out or other power failure. Watchdog circuitry may be provided for checking on the health of the signal processor and a circuit for watching the watchdog may also be provided. A timed window signal may also be provided for indicating the end of the time at which a stopping sequence must be initiated in order to be able to stop at the approaching floor.

The present invention is directed to an illuminated touch button system having a light ring element, a button element located within and surrounded by the light ring element and an array of light emitting diodes. The light ring element comprises a series of individual chambers situated substantially over each light emitting diode in the array. In the preferred embodiment, each chamber includes a set of three light-receiving triangulated surfaces, these surfaces having a series of edges which act to diffuse the illumination of the light emitting diodes. The chambers, in combination with the edges, produce a relatively even, bright light distribution in the portion of the light ring element surrounding the button element.

A driver circuit for the coil in relay contains a suppressor diode across the coil terminals. Two light-emitting diodes are connected in reverse polarity so that one diode operates when the coil is energized and the other diode operates if there is current flowing in the reverse direction when the suppressor diode fails to clamp the coil voltage. The diodes may be of different colors and may be positioned close to each other to produce the composite color when they are energized at the same time or in rapid succession.
