The present invention relates to a process for forming a gel having improved creep resistance at elevated temperatures and having a viscosity of at least about 100,000 cps which includes the steps forming a solvent system of an organic liquid and a water miscible cosolvent, the water miscible cosolvent being less than about 15 wt. % of the solvent system, a viscosity of the solvent system being less than about 1000 cps; dissolving a neutralized sulfonated polymer in the solvent system to form a solution, adding a free radical generating initiator to the solution at a concentration level of about 0.01 to about 1%, a concentration of the neutralized sulfonated polymer in the solution being about 0.5 to about 20 wt. %, a viscosity of the solution being less than about 20,000 cps; and adding under shear conditions about 5 to about 500 vol. % water to the solution having a viscosity less than about 20,000 cps, the water being immiscible with the solution and the water miscible cosolvent transferring from the solution phase to the water phase thereby causing the viscosity of said solution to increase from less than 20,000 cps to greater than 100,000 cps.

The instant invention relates to a process for controlling the viscosity of organic liquids by incorporating in said liquid a minor amount of polymer complex, and optionally a cosolvent for the ionic groups of said polymer. The polymer complex comprises the reaction product of a metal neutralized sulfonated polymer and a basic nitrogen-containing polymer, wherein the polymer complex is substantially soluble in said organic liquid, and pendant sulfonate groups which are substantially insoluble in said organic liquid. The optional cosolvent is selected which will solubilize the pendant sulfonate groups and provide a reasonably homogeneous mixture of solvent, cosolvent and polymer complex. The preferred compositions prepared by the method of the instant invention comprise an organic liquid having a solubility parameter of from 6 to 10.5 in combination with a polymer complex containing from 0.2 up to 10.0 mole % sulfonate groups and nitrogen-containing groups, and optionally a nonvolatile alcohol or amine cosolvent.

The present invention relates to a process for the viscosification of an organic liquid which comprises the steps of forming a first solution of an anionic polymer dissolved in the organic liquid; forming a second solution of a cationic polymer dissolved in the organic liquid; and mixing the first and the second solutions together to form an interpolymer complex of the anionic and cationic polymer in the organic liquid, wherein the organic liquid containing the interpolymer complex has improved viscosification properties. This solution possesses higher viscosity than the mean of the separate viscosities of the starting solutions at relatively low solids content. Moreover, these interpolymer complexes, in hydrocarbon solutions, can be formulated to exhibit shear thickening at increased shear rates. This property is useful in such technological applications as antimisting of the solvent.

The cosolvent is selected because it will solubilize the pendant sulfonate groups and provide a reasonably homogeneous mixture of solvent, cosolvent and ionomeric polymer. The preferred compositions prepared by the method of the instant invention comprise an organic liquid having a solubility parameter of from 6 to 10.5 in combination with a polymer complex containing from 0.2 up to 10.0 mole % sulfonate groups which has been neutralized by a basic material selected from Groups IA and IIA, IB and IIB of the Periodic Table of Elements (and also lead, tin and antimony) and 1 to 1000 parts per million by volume of a nonvolatile alcohol or amine cosolvent.

The present invention relates to improved elastomeric blend compositions for injection molding and extrusion application having improved compression set, weathering stability and physical properties, wherein the improved elastomeric compositions include minimally a metal neutralized sulfonated EPDM terpolymer, a non-polar process oil, an inorganic filler, and a carbon black at critically selected concentration levels. These blend compositions can be readily processed due to their superior rheological properties on conventional plastic fabrication equipment, especially on low pressure injection molding equipment into elastomeric articles having excellent physical properties and desirable rubbery characteristics.
