The present invention relates to a process for the viscosification of an organic liquid which comprises the steps of forming a first solution of an anionic polymer dissolved in the organic liquid; forming a second solution of a cationic polymer dissolved in the organic liquid; and mixing the first and the second solutions together to form an interpolymer complex of the anionic and cationic polymer in the organic liquid, wherein the organic liquid containing the interpolymer complex has improved viscosification properties. This solution possesses higher viscosity than the mean of the separate viscosities of the starting solutions at relatively low solids content. Moreover, these interpolymer complexes, in hydrocarbon solutions, can be formulated to exhibit shear thickening at increased shear rates. This property is useful in such technological applications as antimisting of the solvent.

The present invention provides novel sulfonated ethylene/alpha olefin copolymer compositions obtained by sulfonating ethylene/alpha olefin copolymer having number average molecular weights in the range of about 800 to about 50,000, and which have a high degree of terminal unsaturation. Preferably, at least 30% of the terminal unsaturation is vinylidene terminal unsaturation. Also, the alpha olefin preferably has 3 to about 12 carbon atoms.

The instant invention relates to an improved process for controlling the viscosity of organic liquids at low temperatures by incorporating in said liquid a minor amount of an ionic polymer and a cosolvent for the ionic groups of said polymer. The ionic polymer comprises a backbone which is substantially soluble in said organic liquid and pendant ionic groups which are substantially insoluble in said organic liquid, wherein such ionic polymer or terpolymer is formed from at least one acrylate or methacrylate monomer having at least eight carbon atoms and a minor portion of a sulfonate-containing monomer. A cosolvent is selected which will solubilize the pendant ionomeric groups and provide a reasonably homogeneous mixture of solvent, cosolvent and ionomeric polymer. The preferred compositions prepared by the method of the instant invention comprise an organic liquid having a solubility parameter of from 6 to 10.5 in combination with a sulfonated co- or terpolymer containing from 0.2 up to 10.0 mole percent ionic groups which has been neutralized by a basic material selected from Group IA, IIA, IB and IIB of the Periodic Table of the Elements (also lead, tin and antimony) and a nonvolatile alcohol or amine cosolvent. In a most preferred embodiment, the solvent is a high boiling paraffinic-type oil, the polymer is a metal sulfonate containing acrylate or methacrylate copolymer, comprising from 0.3 to 3.0 weight percent sodium or potassium sulfonate groups, and a C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alcohol, or C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 glycol, or C.sub.3 -C.sub.12 triol is used as the cosolvent.

This invention relates to blends of sulfonated elastomers with crystalline polyolefins. The sulfonated elastomer comprises from about 0.2 to about 20 mole percent sulfonate groups, at least 95% of which are combined with metal counter ions selected from the group consisting of Groups I and II of the Periodic Table of the Elements, aluminum, and lead; organic amines; and mixtures thereof. The crystalline polyolefin is preferably selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, including high and low density polyethylenes, and polypropylene. The crystalline polyolefin comprises a minor portion of said blends.

The present invention relates to improved elastomeric blend compositions for injection molding and extrusion application having improved compression set, weathering stability and physical properties, wherein the improved elastomeric compositions include minimally a metal neutralized sulfonated EPDM terpolymer, a non-polar process oil, an inorganic filler, and a carbon black at critically selected concentration levels. These blend compositions can be readily processed due to their superior rheological properties on conventional plastic fabrication equipment, especially on low pressure injection molding equipment into elastomeric articles having excellent physical properties and desirable rubbery characteristics.

This invention relates to an improved elastomeric composition of metal neutralized sulfonated polymers which are plasticized with a preferential plasticizer at a concentration level of at least 1 part by weight based on 100 parts by weight of the metal neutralized EPDM terpolymer, wherein the preferential plasticizer is a metal rosin salt. The resultant compositions have improved physical properties and can be processed on conventional plastic fabrication equipment.
